Papa Joe's Tex-Mex — Restaurant in Austin

You step in and you know where you are; grandmas kitchen with a little bit of seating. With only 2 family seating tables, and 5/6 couple’s tables, the set up is designed mostly for take out. However, given it’s excellent location to gyms, S. Walnut Creek trail, and Ray G. Park, you’ll probably want to take your food with you regardless.

That said, it’s hard to knock this place for anything. The staff is the definition of Austin hospitality and will cater to you (even if you’re white and have dietary restrictions like myself 😂🤙). ⬅️ if you don’t understand this joke…I’m sorry…you can’t be helped.

The food quality is on par with the price, and you will enjoy what you get no doubt. If you’re familiar with authentic Mexican food items you will feel at home. And if you only know Tex-Mex, don’t worry, it’s in the name.

Service was nice. Portions were fine. Prices were fine.

Now for the bad - all 4 of us have never had such bland food in our lives. The meats weren’t even salted or seasoned. They didn’t even have decent sauces or hot sauce etc to spice it up or give it flavor after it left the kitchen. Honestly, we had to ask for raw peppers which were eating to even add any flavor to the meal. At one point, I poured the hot sauce that they did have directly into my mouth. I finished the entire bottle just to taste something and this was sadly just the watery tomato flavor of the generic hot sauce.

Unless something changes, I’d never recommend anyone going here.

Where to start.. from the moment you walk in the people are very friendly and greet you with a smile on their face which instantly makes you feel welcomed. The food is AMAZING very authentic and well portioned. My personal favorite is the beef fajita plate i can not come here and not eat the fajita plate i would recommend that always :). My husband loves their Menudo and my daughter is addicted to the enchilada plate. i love that every time we come here they remember us and never go wrong w our orders. Over all i give this place 5 stars is delicious and the people are great... i would highly recommend you come here on your next brunch date.. did i mention prices are very reasonable...
