This is not the OPA my family and I remember. The last time we visited was in January 2020, and loved it then as well as the three prior times. Sadly, today was a very disappointing experience.
The food was very good. The Appetizer sampler had very delicious options such as the kebabs, Spanikopita, pita, Tzatziki sauce and Gyro meat. The meat was perfectly cooked, the Spanikopita had a perfect balance of spinach and Phyllis, and the kebab meat, both chicken and pork, was juicy. The side salad had lots of vegetables and some dressing but no seasoning. The meals were good but my son's had issues. The tomato sauce had far too much cinnamon which made his Pastistio almost inedible. The French fries were perfectly cooked but it lacked any seasoning and flavor. A crispy outside and soft creamy center, but without salt and seasoning made the fries very bland. My wife's meal of the Lighter side of Gyro was chock full of pita, flavorful gyro meat, Tzatziki sauce and a salad with tomatoes, onions, greens and Greek Seasoning. My wife loved every bite and raved about it. My meal of Moussaka was delicious. The eggplant was perfectly cooked and in between was deliciously seasoned ground beef, and firm yet creamy potatoes, and topped off with a deliciously creamy bechamel sauce and topped with the tomato sauce. The tomato sauce was not as cinnamon forward as my son's which I found strange. The green beans were perfectly cooked, and had a nice dill flavor. I can't figure out why two starches are on the plate. The potatoes are dry and flavorless, and the rice is an afterthought because it lacks any flavor. My suggestion is to have one starch on the plate, and make it taste delicious. Putting two less than average starches on the plate is not a good idea.
I can look past the scattered nature of our server, but I cannot look past how dirty our table and the vents were. The drink menu was caked in dirt, and sticky which leads me to believe that it hasn't been cleaned in quite some time. Then in the middle of the table, by the salt and pepper shakers were chunks of feta cheese and a small container left behind by a prior customer. The tops of the salt and pepper shakers were caked in dirt, and bits of salt and pepper were stuck in the dirt which looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a while. The air vents were caked in dust and has also not been cleaned in quite some time. Then my wife observed an employee cleaning the tables, and that employee failed to clean the middle of the table where the drink menu and salt and pepper shakers were. This explains why the middle of our table was dirty, and why the drink menu hadn't been wiped down.
To make matters worse I observed a major lack of passion. When the waiter lit the flaming cheese he had his back turned to the table and just said OPA in a very low monotone voice. I was expecting a loud passionate exclamation of OPA because I know Greeks to be very passionate. Sadly, this waiter who lacked emotion really showcased some overall problems that need to be addressed.
If it wasn't for the food tasting so good this rating would have been a 1. And this visit proves no matter how delicious the food is the ambiance and atmosphere can...
Read moreSo, this is a Greek joint in Avon Indiana. The atmosphere is great, the staff was friendly, owner made rounds and talked to us at the table and that's what gets this 3 stars. The food though, which is obviously why you go to a Greek restaurant in the first place, left something to be desired.
First off, the appetizer. Hummus is something I make myself, a friend who owned a Greek diner down in Linton Indiana before he passed taught me how to make it when I was a kid hanging out in his kitchen. There are a lot of ways to make it, some are good and some aren't. This place has the texture down, but it was very bland. Definitively the most mild hummus I've ever eaten. Quantities were weird too. You get 8 very small 1/8th slices of a pita (yes, a pita cut into eighths) to eat what appears to be about 10 ounces of hummus. Its a pretty big amount, and not much to serve it on. Fortunately, one of the main courses came with more pita, but that clearly wasn't the intent of the appetizer, to be supplemented with sides from your main.
Main courses were acceptable I guess. I got a Tyrokopita dinner, which is one of my favorite Greek entres, simply a filo pastry stuffed with cheese and spices. Extremely fun finger food that tastes amazing if you're a cheese head like me. Well, there were 6 of these little things, maybe two bites if you want to stretch the experience out on the plate, along with a giant pile of rice, 3 giant slices of a potato, and some green beans that were way beyond overcooked. Now, I get it that things cost money to make, and they want to make sure that everyone goes home full. Sides however shouldn't be looking like the main dish. It would be like ordering a steak and they bring you out 6 medallions along with 3 baked potatoes and act like the steak is still the main dish. Very disappointed again with the portions provided. Also, some sort of cross contamination must have happened in the kitchen, as 2 of those pastries had a weird lemon flavor to them which is certainly not intended. Final note on main courses was that I had asked for a drink refill to be brought out along with our food, and that didn't happen, waited for quite a bit trying to flag down a server to get that drink.
Anyway, to sum this up, we were out of there for about a hundred to have dinner with my wife at a sit down. So comparable to casual dining at the Outback or something in price. However, we did roll the dice trying a new place out when we could have went to our old standby. Frankly, it might have been an off night, and I hate to think that this place is sub par, but for our experience and the time it takes for us to get to a place in Avon, we will likely be going back to our old reliable in...
Read moreCome here often; Love the food usually. But today was just a horrible customer service experience all around. Got my usual Greek salad with grilled chicken for lunch. But it was all the yellow stalk and no actual fresh romaine. That’s the part that should be thrown away, not served. Chicken portion was also smaller than usual. Not worth the $18 I pay everyday. Keep in mind this is my main meal of the day for the past week as I’m dieting. Let’s get to the staff attitude problem. I come up to the counter to order and the woman is beyond rude. I believe she’s a manager since she was doing a refund/rering. Rude demeanor, rude elevated voice, and doing everything with extra flair to illustrate her bad mood. Then once my salad is up, she throws the tzatziki sauce in there like it’s a bouncy ball out of pure anger of life. Luckily it didn’t open. I never said anything rude or anything the whole time. But it was extremely off putting. When I went outside, I took another waitress aside and told her how rude the other woman was, only for the rude woman to come outside as if to see what was being said. Crazy. Also, employees need to be drug tested. Three-four times a day employees run outside with cash to random different vehicles everyday and come back with items that obviously fit in their pocket as they have nothing in their arms. Just shady all around here. Love the owner since he’s a fellow Chicagoan, but man, this place needs a...
