For the Newbie: You walk in and get in line to pick out your food at the counter, almost cafeteria style. You pay at the end of the line. CASH ONLY! Then go have a seat! Restaurant is a casual, no nonsense, "old mom & pop" style. The Chicken: My friend says that the best piece fried chicken he's ever had is from this restaurant. He may have even used the word "transcendent." Today, I ate here for the first time, and the fried chicken was very, very good. Loved the crunchy texture of the batter. And my friend said that it was a little off today. I'd love to come back when it's "on," The BBQ: First I have to say that I prefer Western NC bbq over the peppery Eastern style (which is what they serve at Bum's). But, here's my opinion anyway. Pretty good. Because of the pepper, I still couldn't taste the pork as much as I would have liked, but it wasn't offensive. Also, it wasn't moist, but you can't really fault that because he's serving it in a chafing dish, not right off the pig. The meat that was in clumps was a bit tough and dry, but the rest of it that was loose was tender and pretty good. I was sitting at a table with 8 other folks, and they love Eastern style, and they say it's the best. So there you are. In my future visits, I'll be getting the chicken plate instead of the bbq & chicken combo, just so that I can have more of that fabulous chicken. Oh, and the banana pudding is delicious! To me, it seems to be more of a combination of bread pudding and banana pudding, but either way, it's very good. Gotta...
Read moreThe vegetables are usually excellent, have been going there from Greenville for a few months and 3 times in a row I ordered a large order of Chicken n Pastry with several vegetables and 3 times in a row the pastry had no chicken in it and the pastry was too thick and undercooked. I wanted to send them a private msg via facebook but its not an option so I left a comment on one of their recent posts. Rather than reach out to me, they deleted the comment. It was simply straightforward and honest. I paid over $40 bucks for chicken and pastry and some vegetables and it was not satisfactory and to top it off the last and final time I went through the drive through the older lady at the window was aggravated I was using a debit card and slammed the drive through window or thats the way I interpreted it. The veggies are still great tasting but I will never give them another dime of my money - the least they could have done was say "I'm sorry" and now I went a step further to write this review. There are better options closer to my home I will take...
Read moreThe restaurant was recommended by a local, so we decided to try it out even though I'm not too fond of Eastern NC barbeque. When we walked in we had to figure out the 'system' to get fed. You get in line and walk past the food and order as you go. There is no menu posted until you get to the actual food - hurry up, make up your mind. Several selections which were available did not appear on the menu - like french fries ! ! At the end of the line I was informed they did not take plastic, but there was an ATM over in the corner of the room. To get $20 it cost an extra $2.50 which made the overpriced food even pricier. The owner was bustling around, and I stopped to question him about the surprise policy. Not only was he unapologetic, but said he didn't have any credit cards and didn't know why anyone did ! ! As far as I'm concerned, the pig on the sign was...
