I served in a busy restaurant for many years, the service here was terrible. We came for happy hour and assumed the tables that appear to be in the bar area would have happy hour prices, not the case. That's fine, but the hostess could have explained that nicely. So, we paid $2.50 more for our drinks while seated at a table directly next to the bar and having our server go behind the bar to grab our drinks herself. We ate and were given our check before we even had a chance to ask for a second drink. The food was fine by the way, I had a burger, not great but nothing to complain about. We were approached multiple times to see if the check had been paid, it hadn't because we were still conversing and finishing our first round. Finally we decided to pay, leave our table, and grab a second drink by the bar. Only to have the bartender give us attitude and try to make us pay full price for drinks because we had a table. After explaining that we had just cashed out he allowed us to pay happy hour prices. Geesh. I will never go...
Read moreI went to college years ago at Loyola just up the street from Alonso’s and remember it as an area institution, but I was very pleasantly surprised tonight when I had a dinner with friends that was just fantastic. The pizza was great, the crab and cheese topped tater tots were amazing, and the wings were crispy and tender. A wide selection of beers, including a good number on tap. Both the ladies working there tonight were totally Baltimore and a lot of fun. I thought it might be a little loud on a Saturday night, but the noise level was just fine for conversation at dinner. Note that around the back of the building which you can access from the street or alley on one side or the other, there’s a little parking lot with spots designated for Alonso’s and other nearby establishments. Be sure to stop and being mesmerized by the rotating tower of...
Read moreThis is a neighborhood gem. It's a bar with a huge variety of beers and amazing food. They've been in business since 1931 so closing in on a century.
For a bar, they have a nice food menu. They're famous for their burgers. My wife and I split the one pound burger, medium rare. We had the "Chesapeake" burger. It's topped with cheese and crab imperial. It was amazing, and half the one pound burger was plenty.
The burger comes with delicious fries. They split our order into two plates for us. This is a service that I've encountered before, but only in much more expensive restaurants.
Our server mentioned that on Mondays, the one pound burger comes with a $5 discount.
There are lots of delectable looking desserts available, but we're trying to lose weight, so we didn't have any.
I entirely recommend Alonso's on Cold...
