TLDR: slowest service I've ever seen at a pizza place, pricey pies, below average pizza.
TBH, I do not normally take the time to leave a lengthy review (I give restaurants the benefit of the doubt in negative situations), but this was a remarkably bad experience.
On a recent Friday afternoon, I decided to try Angeli's based on their new reputation and the hype about them coming to the neighborhood. This was a regrettable mistake.
I placed my pickup order online and, after waiting the indicated 45 minutes, I went to the store where I waited in a line of disgruntled customers for about 10 additional minutes. I should've known something was wrong when most of the restaurant seating was filled with waiting pickup customers. Some customers were getting very irate and said they had been waiting inside the restaurant for over 45 minutes!
When I got to the counter, I was told my order would need another 10-15 minutes. So, it was about 70 minutes for my pickup order (just 2 pizzas) to be ready, which is fine...but that means it was 25 minutes LONGER than estimated, which is not fine. I finally got my order and went home and was totally dissatisfied with the terrible pizza. The crust was flat and hard as a rock (not supposed to be thin crust), and the toppings were sparse and frankly did not taste very fresh.
I could tell the place was probably shortstaffed and overwhelmed with orders...these guys simply could NOT keep up. It was a one-star experience overall, but I added a star to my review, just for the reason that the employees were trying their best (so, 2 out of 5). But at that point, why not extend the expected wait times or stop taking orders altogether in order to catch up?!
Yes, I'd like to see this place succeed and hope they turn around the business, but not sure that I'm willing to give them another shot personally. This was an exceptionally bad experience, and apparently many other customers also were getting that...
Read moreTried their pizza for the first time this evening since Toss Pizza closed and was very disappointed. Unfortunately, the pizza was heavily charred and burnt on the bottom, not flavorful, and crust was quite dense. It was more like a burnt flatbread than anything resembling a pizza. It brings me no joy in saying this, but this was the worst pizza I’ve ever eaten and will have to throw away the remainder of it. Hopefully this was a blip on the radar, rather than the norm for this business.
All things considered, it was pretty pricey for what it would be under optimal circumstances. If you’d like to support local, I’d would recommend Underground Pizza Company, Vito’s, or Pasta Mista in the Towson area. For more the direction of Hampden, Art House or Paulie Gees would be optimal. Baltimore does have great pizza…this was certainly not it.
If open to feedback, I might recommend the book, “The Elements of Pizza” by Ken Forkish to build a more flavorful crust profile. The crust was likely derived from an industrial process and thrown in an oven OR very, very poorly made by hand and a rolling pin. Pro-tip: never EVER flatten pizza dough like that.
Will not be purchasing from their restaurant again and would...
Read moreWell, unfortunately I can’t recommend this restaurant. Went there this evening for the first time and I hope they can up their game.
Started with the small Caesar salad, discolored lettuce, a generic dressing, and croutons were unremarkable.
Now I’m confused about the pizza and here is why. The toppings, pepperoni, mushrooms, sausage, and the onions were all quite good quality so it is unfortunate that the cheese and the crust were its downfall.
For those who love thick, rubbery cheese, this is the place for you.
But the crust is just plain. There seemed to be no flavor that you get from a proper fermentation and on my pie, the cheese was so thick the some of the crust remained under cooked.
So, for me, this is merely an ok sports bar pizza with good toppings and a fast food Caesar with uninteresting dressing and croutons.
I don’t say these things to put the restaurant down, I say this in hopes that they listen and perhaps aspire to become a place that sets its self apart from all the other wannabe NY style pizza joints in this culinary...
