Diasporan Soul is a small family-owned restaurant in the Hamilton neighborhood offering a variety of plant-based and traditional Jamaican American fusion.
In my opinion, finding good Jamaican food in the area has been a challenge. Often too sweet and not packing enough flavor. But Diasporan Soul has put that opinion to bed. When you walk into Diasporan Soul they have a very nice Afro-centric dining area as well as a sort of apothecary selection for patrons to browse and buy when the dining room is open. However, the night I stopped by they seemed to be doing only carry out, which you order in the back of the restaurant.
My go-to order is always jerk chicken with cabbage, rice & peas, and a beef patty. And Diasporan Soul did not disappoint. The jerk chicken was smoky, seasoned well, and fall off the bone tender. However, next time I'll ask to have my chicken topped with some sauce because that would've definitely taken it over the top. The cabbage was buttery and cooked perfectly and the rice was delicious. The beef patty was actually one of the better beef patties I've had here in the area, with a decent amount of filling.
If you're in the area or looking for a new Jamaican restaurant to try, then you have to give Diasporan Soul a try. The service was pleasant, and the food was delicious and plentiful. I can't wait for...
Read moreI had someone rave to me about how good the food is here, so I wanted to try it for myself. I must say I didn’t have a pleasurable experience. I returned there today after coming earlier in the week, at that time the kitchen was closed. A male worker was so nice to me earlier in the week, that I told him I loved the vibe and would be back after coming all the way from across town to begin with. When I got in today I spoke to the owner, and she gave a VERY nonchalant hello, then the male worker informed her that I was the one who came in earlier in the week, and came back. She didn’t say a word she just looked at me as if to say OK and. I then proceeded to order, but they were out of oxtails, so I said ok I’ll get something else instead. The owner STILL didn’t say a word. I get it we don’t have it choose something else, but to not even acknowledge how much effort I put into patronizing the business was insane to me. I really really wanted to like/try this place, but I just couldn’t spend my money there today. Maybe I’ll give them another try because the male worker was very kind, idk. First impressions are a big...
Read moreI've never had a bad meal or a bad time here. I've been here often and enjoy all the food. Jerk chicken is one of my favorite foods, and theirs is on point! The flavor is great, and it's tender and juicy. I got an order of plantains the other day, and they were honestly the best Ive had at a restaurant. I like my plantains a certain way, not cut too thick, not slimy, and a little crisp around the edges... they got it perfectly. Their veggie chunks and curry chickpeas are great, even for the non-vegans. Service is impeccable, and I've always been treated well, with prompt attention. Even when it's busy, the staff maintains great service. The dining area is clean and well decorated, and is great for a solo visit, group trip, or even to host/attend an event. I've done them all. The dining area also serves as a retail space with plenty of books, herbs, incense, etc. It's...
