3.5 stars. wanted to try full on Maryland blue crab dinner as they are in season right now. much searching through tourist traps, places closed either temporarily or permanently, or prices too high. finally found this place on the net. so down to the yacht basin and stopped a bit away by parking guy. told us no spots in close by lots so go to garage around the corner. but he let us head down close to see about the wait time. bit of a line but fortunately table for two up now. i was seated by a personable server-in a mask-while the wife parked. patio had a nice water view and was enclosed with plastic sheeting. extensive seafood menu here. broiled, boiled, fried, etc. lots of folks ordering platters of the blue crabs. they are quite small compared to the Dungeness served around the PNW and appeared to be boiled with seasoning and served ready to crack and enjoy. not for us today. dear wife chose lobster/crab roll. and i chose the crab cake dinner. her roll was overstuffed with a mix of Lobster and crab similar to tuna salad. after forking some out to share she dove in. it was very tasty with not too much sauce and crunchy veggies. not as good as a straight lobster roll but pretty good. the roll was not toasty warm but held up well to the salad. this was served with some kettle chips. my crab cake dinner came with numerous side choices and i chose Chesapeake rice (?) and grilled asparagus. starting with the good, the two jumbo broiled crab cakes were delicious-sweet fresh tasting and appeared to have little if filler. all crab and outstanding. can't say the sides were even really worth talking about. the rice was soooo bland. what makes it Chesapeake rice anyway-some little bits of shredded carrots and no seasoning? two bites and i'm out. chose not too complain as they were quite busy. the asparagus looked good and grilled but not sure when that actually happened. not warm not seasoned and not cooked to proper doneness. the tartar style sauce with a little dill served on the side did wonders for it but that's the only thing that made it truly edible. seafood good, sides not so much. next time maybe a salad. but i'd...
Read moreThis is another one of my staple restaurants that I should have taken the time to write a review about. If seafood is your deal, then this place is the real deal. I’ve been wanting to eat some “real” crabs all summer and had this itch (no comments from the peanut gallery) for some crabs. I had a friend turn me onto her favorite place in VA, and though they were okay, they didn’t fulfill that itch. So, I decided to take myself to Baltimore, where I knew I could finally have what I wanted. Let me say I have a couple of places in my Baltimore seafood reservoir. But I decided today I wanted Nick’s Seafood. I live over 40 minutes away and wanted to go someplace worth my time, gas, and energy driving.
I started with an entry crabcake because I was trying to save all available space for the crabs. As you can see from the photo, I ate half of it before remembering I needed to take pictures; sorry. But it was so good; don’t judge me. Just wait until you taste their crab cakes for yourself-no fillers. Then, please wait for it…the giant crabs. I was like a kid with a new toy. Every single one was heavy, meaty, juicy, and so damn good. Okay, can you tell I’m a crab lover? In my head, I was like Denzel Washington in the movie Training Day when he said, “King Kong, don’t have nothing on me.” I say, King Kong don’t have nothing on these crabs; lol. 😜
I had a great waiter named Eric, who was professional, attentive and friendly. I had a window overlooking the water while I devoured my crabs. As you can see from the photo, “mission accomplished.” What’s so funny is that I concentrated on eating the body because I didn’t want to get too full and left the legs to take home later as a treat.
Other menu items I can attest that I’ve eaten through the years are as follows: Fried Oysters Crab Pretzel Fried Green Tomatoes Crispy Brussel Sprouts
Okay, I’m going to stop here because I’ve had over half the lunch and dinner menu, and there is not one thing I didn’t like.
I don’t need to tell those in the DMV to make their way to Nick’s. If you love seafood, make this one of your stops when you are in the area. You...
Read moreHadda stop for some seafood while in the Bmore area visiting family. Nicks was the spot to be and apparently everyone else knew it too! The parking lot was packed but after a couple laps, we were able to slide in. 45 minute wait later (worth it) and ya boy got his hands on some stellar blue crabs 🦀 . We ordered a couple different dishes to share (3 people) and it was more than enough food.
1/2 dozen blue crabs Crab stuffed pretzel (Don't sleep💯) Crab egg rolls (I'm sure you're seeing the trend here 🦀) Calimari Chesapeake fries
Crabs in Baltimore are pretty straight forward. All the old bay you can manage and enough butter to drown your sorrows. I passed on the butter but the crabs were very well seasoned and steaming hot. The pretzel...oh boy the pretzel...mmmm...sorry, lemme lock in. Definitely partake in the stuffed pretzel, worth every penny if you aren't scared of dairy (might put the Lactose Intolerant on life alert). Egg rolls are top tier regardless of the meat so put some fresh Crab in there and ion even need to tell you how quick they disappeared off the plate. The calimari was also nice and fresh, accompanied by good sauces and light breading that gave you just enough of that crunch you expect.
Only issue we had was with our original order of sweet potato fries. They came out looking very, very sad. Limp and soggy, my mom compared the basket of fries to spaghetti/worms if that gives you a good visual of what we were working with. Had our waitress sub them out for the Chesapeake fries (steak fries with old bay) and they were much better, no complaints.
Had a very good time here but couple things to note; Very loud, trying to keep up a convo is going to become exhausting. Live Music possible, at least when we went on a Friday evening. Long wait, again Friday evening. Terrible parking, not nearly enough spots, and likely going to get worse. A lot of apartments springing up directly across, taking up land needed for parking. Likely to increase wait times even more once everyone moves in. Definitely worth it though, and I'd stop by...
