Sassafrass Cafe — Restaurant in Bar Harbor

We hired Sassafrass to cater a 50th anniversary party for about 35 guests, several of whom were children and one of whom had severe dietary restrictions. Amanda Kendall proved incredibly responsive and easy to work with. She helped us come up with a great menu that met our budget and satisfied a family full of serious cooks and foodies, while making sure that our guest with dietary needs got a great meal as well. In addition, she made sure that the kids in the party, ranging in age from 18 months to 8, were well taken care of.

The quality of the food was extremely high, so high in fact that I'd rate it as perhaps the best catered meal I've had. The duck, in particular, was incredibly good.

The staff was wonderful, and seemed to enjoy themselves as much as the guests. They were attentive to everyone, patient, and there when they were needed. As a result, setup was seamless: hors d'oeuvres and drinks just seemed to appear on schedule without any apparent effort. Main courses came out at the right time, there was flexibility about dessert, and the staff seemed to know exactly when to let activity trump food and vice-versa. The moment you step inside, you’re greeted by a cozy, homey atmosphere with just the right touch of whimsy—it immediately makes you feel welcome and relaxed.
