I've visited this coffee shop several times and generally enjoyed the drinks, but today's experience left me deeply disappointed.
I ordered a lavender lemon matcha -- a drink I've had before -- but today it was served completely unshaken. When I politely asked if it could be shaken, the barista huffed, stirred it aggressively with a spoon, slammed the spoon down (splashing matcha), and poured it into another cup. The response was unnecessarily rude and unprofessional.
The shop itself was a mess. We sat at the bar, which was covered in crumbs, chocolate milk, and coffee stains. The garbage can next to us was overflowing from the bottom, leaving a large puddle beneath us. No one made any effort to clean the area, which created a neglected and unwelcoming atmosphere.
My two-year-old son was enjoying himself, interacting sweetly with other patrons who smiled at his playful energy. He took a mug and a stuffed monkey from a shelf placed at toddler eye level and was pretending to serve coffee. It was innocent, imaginative play. If anything had broken, I would've taken full responsibility.
Rather than simply asking me -- his clearly present parent -- to take the mug back, a staff member went directly to my child, who was quietly sitting in a chair, and took it from him. She then asked, "Whose kid is this?" in a noticeably condescending tone. When I said I was watching him, another customer interjected, claiming she was watching him more than I was. I was with another adult who confirmed that we were both supervising him closely, and that he had done nothing disruptive.
The staff member continued repeating herself about the mug possibly breaking, even after I acknowledged her concern several times. She also said kids weren't allowed to roam around the shop. Her tone felt unnecessarily provoking. While I was explaining to my son that it was time to leave, the same customer again began yelling at me. No staff member stepped in to de-escalate the situation or address the other patron's behavior.
When I tried to explain that another barista had already been rude earlier -- throwing a spoon down and splashing matcha -- the staff member sarcastically replied, "Well, let me see the spoon she threw." After being spoken to condescendingly multiple times in front of my child, I finally lost my patience. I told the customer to "lose some weight and mind her own business" and asked the staff member to stop repeating herself. I admit that response wasn't ideal, but the repeated disrespect and lack of accountability pushed me to my limit.
At that point, someone else came over and told me I was no longer welcome -- yet nothing was said to the rude staff member or the confrontational customer.
Unfortunately, this isn't an isolated issue. Just two days ago, I watched two elderly women waiting at the counter while two employees looked at their phones and ignored them. Eventually, another staff member stepped in and awkwardly said, "Sorry, I don't know what that was." It seems the staff here is about 50/50 -- half are friendly and helpful, the other half indifferent or openly rude.
Today's situation could have been handled with basic kindness and communication. I always watch my child and believe in encouraging independence in social spaces -- especially in a neighborhood coffeehouse. It's incredibly disappointing to be treated this way in a place that claims to take a people-first approach.
Between the aggressive behavior, lack of professionalism, unsanitary conditions, and complete mishandling of a situation involving a toddler, I won't be recommending this establishment. I sincerely hope management takes a hard look at how customers -- especially parents and children -- are treated in...
Read moreMojo’s is truly my favorite place to stop to get some LOCALLY OWNED coffee and treats. Definitely doesn’t hurt that Fragapane’s is right next door, creating an unbeatable combo of incredible handcrafted drinks and pastries. Their coffee is brewed to perfection, no acrid or burnt taste you may find at a national chain, with milk expertly steamed to create a beautiful delicious microfoam. Even if you don’t enjoy coffee, they have a HUGE selection of teas and in-house made chai, nothing prepackaged or old and dried out. Really, open up your tea bag next time and you shan’t find some old green paper looking pulp that is common at other commercial chains, but lovely intact tea leaves and herbal blends that soothe both the soul and throat. Don’t be afraid to snag a bagel because those are also LOCALLY MADE from Cleveland Bagel Co., and are good TRADITIONAL bagels. The last and best part of Mojo’s though is the kind and welcoming staff, who you can see craft each beverage with complete customer satisfaction in mind. Their friendly and welcoming aura creates an atmosphere perfect to either start your day on a relaxed and positive note or unwind after work with a friend and chat with a warm drink in hand. Don’t expect the hurried and frantic behavior you might see at a non-local commercial chain store as they try to keep up with 100s of orders, disregarding quality in the process. Here, the craft of coffee is met with respect and love, and you can taste it in every sip. Perfect for someone even as picky as a Libra. Nothing but LOVE and RESPECT for ALL the...
Read moreThis place was one of our go-to coffee shops, went there at least once a month for coffee and lunch. They made decent coffee but the best part is that they had alternative egg options for those who are intolerant. That is, until we came in today (for my birthday) and ordered my usual focaccia sandwich with vegan egg and a girl I’ve never seen working here before told me they “don’t do that, either get all vegan or nothing”. Sorry, but hard pass on vegan bacon and cheese. She said it was a pricing issue, they were undercharging for vegan items. I said ok sure I’ll pay the full vegan price then but I’d like only the vegan egg. She said absolutely not, they don’t do that. So I went without lunch, on my birthday, and while I was waiting for my coffee I overheard what very much sounded like her complaining about “customers like her” (referring to me) who are too complicated and can’t just be vegan. Uhm. Ok? I’m not coming back here again after today. Horrible experience. I guess it’s my fault for having an allergy though, I’m just “too complicated” for one ingredient different that I’ve ordered a hundred times before without issue insert...
