I really wanted to like this place because it got off to a good start with our waitress and they had a fish fry for their special. And then it went downhill. My friend and I both ordered the fish fry with the whitefish. We asked our waitress for more silverware because there was only one set on the table. We never got the silverware, even after she served our food. She plopped it down and disappeared. We never saw her again until she delivered the bill. If it weren’t for the nice people sitting behind us, with an extra set of utensils, we would’ve had to hunt some down. Our waitress never once came back to see if we wanted more to drink or if our food was OK. Not once. We had the same problem in a restaurant the day before here in Bayfield. Is bad food service epidemic in this town? As for the food, it was mediocre at best. Everything tasted like it had been frozen and then fried. The white fish, which was supposed to have been deep-fried, was actually mushy and limp. The french fries my friend had and the tater tots I had tasted like they came straight out of a freezer bag, which is OK, providing they are cooked properly. Both were wimpy. We ate it because we were so hungry. We wondered if the food was cooked ahead, left and then nuked to get it warm again. That’s what it tasted and felt like. The high spot of the meal was the coleslaw, which...
Read moreI am kind of surprised to say this, but out of the 3 places I tried whitefish this week in town, this was my favorite. I guess I can't say if it was local/fresh for sure, but it was good. Lightly breaded and deep fried. Coming from more of a bar than restaurant place, I was expecting thick breading (which I don't prefer). So when I got the lightly breaded fish fingers and fries, I was pleasantly surprised. Nicely fried with just the right firmness. The tartar sauce was good, above average. My wife had the fish tacos and liked those and the kids split a nachos appetizer and finished that off.
Definitely a sports bar atmosphere, and seems to be more of a locals place- as many people appeared to know each other. A decent selection of tap beers and local options too. Had a local cider, apple pie, I think? That was pretty good. Prices were more reasonable than other places in town, and was one of the more affordable meals we had for a family of 5. It was an evening that other places in town were closed, and after 7 already, so options were a bit limited, but after eating here I wouldn't hesitate to come back when needing something fairly quick and...
Read moreThis was our 2nd time at Morty’s (last time was 2 years ago). We ate on a Monday night early July (but not during 4th of July week, so Bayfield was not crowded). We were the only ones eating at the time. We loved it the first time we ate here. It is bar food (burgers and such). This time we started with ½ orders of onion rings (we had at our last visit) and fried cheese curds (first time eating these). The rings are exceptional and our waitress topped off our basket after we finished them. The curds are outstanding too – my wife liked them more than the rings. The burgers are great too (1/3 lbs. if I remember). My youngest had the Chicken Bites (note: not tenders). These are little pieces of boneless chicken that is fried, but not what you would expect. They have a garlic flavor to them that was unexpected and pretty tasty. Being a pub, they had a good selection of beers on tap and more that are not. While in Bayfield, we have spots that we eat at (that we like and go back to). Morty’s is the only one that we seriously consider doing twice during...
