The Local American Saloon — Restaurant in Belgrade

This is a review of just tonight's experience.

We ordered the Maple Whiskey Bitters cocktail and a Cosmo. The whiskey had so much Walnut Bitters, it's the first thing in my life I instantly spat out on reflex and I can still taste the walnuts bitters 2 hours later at home after a just couple sips, and eating since. The Cosmo was bad, much worse than the one my date had me taste at Wasabi for opposite reasons. I've never asked to send something back or sub in my life until now at 31 as I was raised not to and working in kitchens felt it was too taboo.

I got the potine mix on potato wedges as an app. It didn't come out til after the meal. Also working in kitchens for about a decades that wasn't poutine. There was no breading, just a plain mozz clump underneath the wedges and gravy that I found after eating the mediocre wedges. The gravy mid too, with a couple green onions on top, not enough to look like a garnish or add real flavor, just like 2 of them.

My fish sandwich was pretty good honestly. The Caesar salad dressing was too bland to really taste on the salad. Lemon juice, Parm, and better croutons like the blended 3 bread type in the yellow bag from Sysco would take it up from a bland 5 to a 10. My partner ordered a medium steak that came out half way between medium rare and rare.

I liked the server Savannah, but she got flustered and said something to my partner got the impression she thought we were being possibly Karen types or something, but really this was the worst dinning out either of us have had this year and we were very polite. Like after a sip of those drinks the next time she came round "excuse me something happened to these. This isn't supposed to taste so super bitter and that tastes way off too, could we please sub them? (for non mixed drinks from the bar so no 2nd mistake could happen if it's a new bartender etc) My partner said something about the app cause it hadn't come out by the time we got our entrees and we had to bring it up cause it was lost/forgotten, but she was very polite. She got conflicting messages over comping part of it by talking to the hostess while the waitress was busy, which I get. Waitress said it was too late to do what the hostess offered which I get too. Also the bathroom floor in the men's was disgusting. Someone had peed like 2 feet out from the urinal all over the floor so you either had to stand way back or in it and the trash was overflowing on the floor. Of 30ish visits since opening night, worst one. I liked this place for the increased variety over the Mint as a local option. We haven't been back in 6 months this...

My husband and I decided to make our 25th anniversary this year memorable to us, even though our anniversary falls on 9/11, we decided to take a trip to donate our 12 passenger van to a church that we’ve once visited on the rosebud reservation in SD they were voted the poorest county in American by credit karma in 2023, to get to my point we drove our van out from Niagara Falls area, we rented a vehicle in Sioux Falls and went from SD, visited Yellowstone then ended up in Bozeman Yellowstone to fly home, the reason I’m leaving a review is because the food was amazing, after all our food stops this one is the only place we keep thinking of!! My husband was literally looking at the menu after we got home. I said don’t show me that I want to go back!! They had the best steak I have ever eaten in my life! So we decided to make this restaurant a definite stop when we make it back with our whole family. I hope the servers are welcoming of a big family(15) we usually get the whispers and eye rolls:( between 6 children and 5 grandchildren we still like to take vacations together twice a year. It’s not so easy on good old Brandon’s inflation! So thank you for keeping the prices low! Anyway our server that night was great, she kept checking on us and we got our food faster than expected, more than likely because it was kinda late, but after tasting the food it would have been worth a wait if we had to. We don’t take pics of our food because they are usually not worth posting, but I wish I took pics to post along with this review. My husband ordered the ribeye with a baked potato and roasted veggies, I wanted something light due to flying out the next day, so ordered the loaded baked potato with a Caesar salad, we shared a small nacho and it was still big! I tried my husbands steak and it was amazing, ugh I wish I would have ordered my own. The nachos were soooo good. Can’t wait to go back, but have to:/ I’m glad he found this place because due to most places closed around 9 we were going to settle for McDonald’s:/ I know restaurants get a lot of flak for not being perfect but hey nobody is, and there’s not one restaurant out there that will get it perfect every time but they try their best!! This restaurant is 1.5 miles from our house and we typically enjoy it. It's convenient and the food is usually decent. However we went in tonight and the whole experience was terrible. It had been a rough Monday and as a mom I wasn't up to making dinner and having cleanup so we figured we would go out and have a nice relaxing evening. It was anything but. My husband ordered a burger and it came out 10-15 minutes before any of the rest of our food. Our little boys' meals came out next and sadly the kids chicken strips was probably the best tasting item we ordered. I ordered the Cobb salad and had to wait an additional 20 minutes after our children's food arrived. When my salad came out, I was willing to just let it go. I was starving and just wanted to eat. That was not to be. The salmon was completely flavorless (even after adding salt), dry and generally resembled cardboard. The dressing on the salad tasted like straight mayonnaise and the avocado was not ripe and tasted like rubber. It took an inordinate amount of time to resolve the issue. The server did not even check back within a reasonable time after delivering the salad. The manager did not even make it out to talk to us. We had to walk up front because it took so long for our server to make it back to our table with a check. I cannot express the disappointment of our experience this evening. This is after I said this is possibly the worst salad I’ve ever had. The staff did not seem very sincere in resolving this at all and the fact that it took so long and we never even had the opportunity to speak to a manager speaks volumes. I never leave bad reviews and having waited tables and worked in restaurants for several years, tend to have a lot of tolerance for bad restaurant experiences but this was, I have to say, one of the worst experiences I have had in a long time.
