Food was very good. Was offered a special egg dish at brunch, identical to the $20 menu item with different protein (scallops instead of pork), asked how it compared to the menu item…was told it’s a special and it’s very good. Never mentioned that it was a $41 order and then her reply when I questioned was essentially sorry, not sorry we only disclose pricing when asked.
It’s a shame to be dishonest to customers who were attracted to the restaurant for the good food you’re serving. Really disappointing end to an otherwise impressive meal
EDIT The restaurant claims it is "rude" to alert their customers that a special is literally double the priciest item on the menu. However, by their same ridiculous logic, they shouldn't list prices on their menu either out of respect for their clientele who they assume is clearly flush with disposable income.
Your menu sets an expectation of price point and it is safe to presume that if the special is very similar to a menu item it is not sneakily 200% of the cost without warning, information with which the customer is blindsided when the check drops. Please don't think this is critical of the server (who was tipped generously anyway...begrudgingly) if they were just executing the restaurant's policy. The review is critical of the misleading, dishonest and irresponsible policy of the restaurant which they apparently blame on 'having too much respect for the customers.' It is a shame, bc the restaurant is otherwise lovely, but they have now put in writing that swindling their cusomers is by design. This is no way to conduct your business and your 'sorry, not sorry' reply is more to the point. Pretty lame. sorry,...
Read moreI saw someome make a TikTok about this place and immediately knew I had to add that to my list. I headed out to Berkeley on a Friday morning to try it out and I bought a friend who isnt a big fan of Thai and or Asian food. I was thankful to experience this style of northern Thai cuisine I believe the order Tanzie referred to it as. The hospitality and service was above average. I enjoyed all of my food and so did my friend. The pork jowl was agreed to be are favorite out of the all the dishes we tried. Very juicy , flavorful and just all around deliscious topped off with that crispy fried garlic. The brown rice over that soft scrambled "lava egg" was to die for paired with the savory tomato based minced pork that I ordered extra spicy of course. The star of the show that me and my friend both agreed on had to be the "prik nam pla" which I would describe as a sweet and spicy vinegar or fish sauce based dipping sauce accompanied by a nice punch of spice from the thai chili peppers. I dont have any complaints whatsoever and I will...
Read moreI highly recommend Tanzie in Berkeley. My daughter and I had impromptu breakfast here. Delicious. Friendly. Warm. Cozy. Interesting.
All new flavors for me. The food is Northern Thai (Chiang Mai). The Khanom Krok are delicious. First time for me. Thin shell made from multiple flours filled with coconut cream and topped with scallions, yam, corn, etc. They were delicate yet rich.
We also shared the Sai Oua lava eggs. This consisted of delicious jasmine rice topped with ribboned scrambled eggs. The eggs were done in a way I’ve never experienced. Light, soft, with lots of flavor. It also comes with chicken sausage patties, clearly flavored with lemon grass, ginger, Thai chili. A delicious tapenade is also offered.
Many of the dishes were made by the owner’s mother. You can tell that the food is meaningful to them and that great care is taken to prepare it. The staff is friendly and our server enthusiastically engaged in discussion about this specific style of food.
Great teas and fresh fruit juices...
