Out of all the restaurants around Berkeley that take student meal swipes, Golden Bear Café takes the metaphorical cake for one of the best places to stop by for quality food. With delicious burgers and crisp fries, along with vegan options, the GBC is a nice place to pass by when heading down to Lower Sproul Plaza or going to Dwinelle Hall for a meal. Salads, loaded fries, and a lot of beverages work as great replacements that will get you the most value out of a meal swipe. Additionally, the GBC stocks a bevy of instant ramen, drinks, and a special Peet's Coffee for the early birds that need a sip of coffee to fully wake up.
Avoid prime times from 11:00 AM to 1:30 AM on school weekdays, since the line for service tends to be pretty long as students go for their lunch breaks here. Lines can be a little confusing as some of the check-out stations actually double as meal ordering stations, but that really depends on how staffed they are and how much people there is in line. Overall, if you're a student here at Berkeley and hate eating at the dining halls, Golden Bear Café is a nice place to...
Read moreTo best use your meal points (or money) at GBC, I recommend you get one of the following:
GBC cripsy (or grilled) chicken salad. BOMBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB. I get it with everything (both cheese, tomato, crutons, olives, onions, and cucumbers) .They don't have all the dressings they used to have (such as my favorite thousand island). There are only three dressings to choose from now. Booooo. I'll just bring my own thousand island packets then hmph! I personally think that this salad tastes better than the one at Intermezzo. GBC salad costs $6, and it looks like it won't fill you up, but it makes me feel full fsho.
Bagel with the works (need to get before bagel bar closes sometime before noon): it's a toasted bagel with cream cheese, cucumber, bacon, tomato, and onions. AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!
Avoid going to GBC right before/after class. That's when the lines (for the food and the cashier) are the longest!! Some lines do not accept debit/credit cards, so don't waste your time waiting in...
Read moreI asked for a breve latte and the person at the desk repeated back latte. I corrected her and said breve latte. She seemed confused so I specified that it was a latte with cream instead of milk. She said ok, and then they made a regular latte. I asked and she said they didn't have cream. I said I wish they had told me before I ordered. They responded with well do you want it or not. I already spent 5 bucks on this latte so said "I guess, but this isn't what I wanted" and she just handed me the coffee and continued working. I don't like being that guy complaining to the barista, but I wish I could have been compensated in some way. The latte was also not worth 5 bucks and they didn't add any espresso to the...
