July 17, 2017 Went here today because we were in town, and I remember the place from years ago. Granted I have not been here in some time, however having a place that is 95 years old, it should still have the qualities of old.
First, it was dirty, and I work in the industry as a chef, and I would have fired someone. Lucky the waitress noticed this and corrected the problem. Still no excuse.
Second, this was out dated food, menu, and service all around. I understand that people will give these place a 5 star because it is what they are use to. What I am use to is burger that is not a frozen patty, which i was told can either be made medium well or well done. Cannot make it any other way. That is a sign the "chef" can cook a burger to order. Omelette was runny because the mushrooms and tomatoes were not cooked properly either. Both of these have a higher water contraction and need to be cooked separately then added to the omelette to finish off. If not, then you have a runny omelette. My son's coleslaw was something my grandmother made. Way to much mayo, and it was run through a food processor because everything was the same size. Not drained either because any chef worth their weight knows that cabbage contains about 80% water, and a good slaw is without that. Add some salt to it, let it drain, and season to taste. Cooking 101. Or just You tube it.
Third, I could and would have explained this to the waitress if she had came to my table once. It took almost 10 minutes to get my drinks, and I was asked if they wanted a straw. No my 4 year old will drink ice water in a 32 oz cup please and thank you. I had to ask for a refill on my coffee, my wife toast was dripping in butter and was burnt, and it cost me 68 bucks.
Not worth it. I work hard for my money, and when I eat out, I have a understanding that I want quality over quantity any day. Good food is good food, and it is sorry to see an establishment head down this road. Your staff is not trained correctly, a good short order cook is a GOD because it us a very demanding job, and a good one is worth his/her weight in gold, and a chef who knows his/her position is key. Good food comes from the heart, not from the people telling you what you wanted to hear.
Clean up your act, train your staff, bring yourself into the 21st century because you can have modern with that old time feel as everyone remembers it. You need a competent chef to run the kitchen, and a floor manager who can run the place.
Thank...
Read moreReally cool experience to step into this old school diner. Brought us back to the good ol' days! Very simple yet extensive menu of everything you can think of and then some! They introduced us to the original soft drinks before Coke and Dr Peper lol ..Must check out this place if you're in the area! Quality of food itself was ok and typically what you expect for cheap diner food. If you're being health conscious, or on very restricted diets then I wouldn't recommend this place at all. If you don't mind and you want to experience something different than what you're probably used to, then yes, visit and enjoy this place! Plenty of free parking surrouding the restaurant itself! Easy to get to. Huge good sized portions of food served and the prices are lower than we expected! If you're particular about housemade food, then again, you might look elsewhere because even though they say housemade, they do it with pre-made items so there are a lot of hidden calories, sugar and ingredients to consider. Definitely if you're a diabetic, I would be careful with what you order, especially desserts! Although they do offer sugar free options as well! There are loads of things on the walls to read, see and keep you busy until your food arrives. Overall, very happy we were told about this place and thankful that we went! If you're in the area, I think you should try them out and enjoy! Again, it's more about the old school ambience and the historical fact of it being an over 100 year old restaurant and it's still around! The staff was very friendly and they have all the retired aprons hanging from their ceiling, which was an interesting conversation starter! Some of which still come back to work on occasion, even though they consider themselves retired already ..ehehe! Too cute! They must really love & miss their...
Read moreWhen I asked for take-out breakfast I received a glare. When I took my food home I could count the number of home fries we each received with our meal (aka the remnants of someone else's order), in addition to possibly a mere half a cup of hash. When I ate my food it ALL tasted like grease. No point describing how my innards felt afterwards. I fully get (and avoid) the concept of greasy spoon diners, which is why I did not expect the "best" diner in the area to have literally soaked my food in cooking oil. The lack of actual food was also super disappointing (yet a blessing in disguise once I was done eating it). I could have quietly moved on from this experience after receiving a glare, I could have also lived with a bit too much grease, yet to be fed the pathetic looking home fries that should have gone in the compost, along with an amount of hash that wouldn't have fed a child, were the deciding points this review needed to be written. If your facility can't keep up with your customers' orders (the place was packed which is why we ordered to go) then STOP welcoming in customers and allow your staff to cook the decent food you are known for. Also don't PUNISH people who take out. We in no way shape or form received the same servings as those eating inside, yet we paid the same price. I'd say by this point your diner is living off its reputation from the good old days. Satisfaction in any aspect of our experience was not received. A full...
