Upon leaving the Hilton across the street I was in the mood for a bagel and coffee. I saw this bagel store and when leaving the hotel and was pleasantly surprised to see my thoughts were answered. I am an egg bagel kind of guy and was happy to see they offered them. In fact one of the workers just put out a new batch of egg bagels as I approached next in line which made me even more excited.
Bagels in NJ are just different from what you would find in NYC. Especially when it comes to egg bagels. In NJ egg bagels are much more darker yellow in color and have sort of a hard crisp when you bite into them. They also feel like you know they will be hard as a rock by the next day if you do not eat them the same day you buy them.
Overall, the egg bagel itself was pretty tasty for a bagel in NJ. Could have been because i got one from the fresh batch they just put out. The reason for the three star rating was the service you get here. Everyone just seemed like they did not want to be there. Everyone looked mean and miserable. One of the workers kept looking at me like he wanted to fight me or something. Really, really weird. They also moved so slow that there was 1 person in front of me when I got there and by the time it was my turn to order the line was out the door. No sense of urgency to keep the line moving at all. It felt more like we were on their time to get the food they sell which I did not understand since there was nothing that much special about this place expect for the fact of the location, so maybe they felt some sort of entitlement, I dunno. I paid for my coffee and buttered bagel (from a guy at the register who was a little nicer and seemed like the owner) and was on my way.
I think if they can work on the customer service aspect of their business with the workers they hire it could be that...
Read moreMy review of bagel places is always only on the bagels. I’m just not going to expect the friendliest, bubbliest service at a bagel shop or deli. Maybe that’s my New Jersey upbringing. :-)
For a few years I’d been going to O’Bagel as my bagel place of choice until I moved to the Somerset area and found another bagel place that I thought even out-did O’bagel. Recently I have Realized that my go to bagel place of the last many years has declined in bagel quality significantly. I went back to O’Bagel recently, since it’s close to my work, and was blown away by the bagel compared to what I’ve been recently used to. Shows how the quality of my former place had declined considerably. Shame.
The fact is, I have not had another bagel in New Jersey recently that comes anywhere close to the quality of a NYC Ess-a Bagel as does an Obagel. It’s a combination of consistency and flavor, something most bagel places just don’t do. On a best day for an O bagel it can be slightly doughy or partially cooked looking around some of the edges, leaving the perfect consistency on the inside. A good bagel can’t just be another piece of bread in bagel Shape. And the current O’Bagel compared to any other bagel I’ve had anywhere in New Jersey it’s just leagues ahead.
As someone who sometimes likes to sit at an indoor table with a little bit of space, it’s the one thing this place is missing. There is only a counter for about three barstools which always feels a little cramped to me and then it’s right by the door so if it’s cold out it’s not related to comfortable...
Read moreHad an experience here at 6:15 AM that made my blood boil and almost made me cause a scene at this place. I had just picked up a $30 order that I do on a weekly/semi weekly basis. Occasionally I pick up orders that are $70 to $90 for business breakfast meetings. As I exited this AM and was halfway out the door, I heard the manager say to me in a sarcastic tone, "Thanks for the tip, you are always so nice". It took all of my self control not to storm back in there and give him a piece of my mind in front of other customers on line. This manager, as has been documented on many, many reviews below is a miserable, unhappy, impolite and wretched human being. The way he treats his customers as you can see below would never warrant a "tip". And he had the gall to mention a "tip"? And he wasn't man enough to say it to my face. He said it to me as I was halfway out the door. I am done with this place. Done! We have many options in this area where the people working there are respectful and grateful that you come in and buy their bagels. They will now benefit from my $30 to $90 orders and I will be happy to...
