Been going to Famous for years, and it was nice to watch the change to the new place. With this change came a more hip and upbeat ambiance that is very welcomed. The design obviously required much thought and I would say the end result was very well achieved. I drove by on a recent warm day and I was impressed at the open wall curbside with diners enjoying their food right by the sidewalk….very smart design! So, A+ for Curb Appeal. In terms of the staff, Peri, brother-in-law, and the other favorites from the previous spot take great pride in making sure everything is up to par. We always receive the most welcoming greeting when we pick up, always addressed by our names, and if you catch them in some rare downtime, you’ll enjoy some friendly talk. I’ve rarely encountered an ordering issue, and if I do, it’s handled with the most efficiency. I remember I had an issue a year ago, so I called and told Peri about it. He offered his sincere apology, admitted that human error can occur, and he gave us a replacement even though I told him it really wasn’t that crucial. Problem handled efficiently! That was just once in the years we’ve dined there, so we always expect our order to be spot on, even when we include custom requests. Another A+ for Service. Last but not least, the food! The pizza is one of our family’s local favorites, and the fact that the family experimented with some changes was a good thing. The Sicilian is amazing, and since we’re sticklers for a great crust, you’ll rarely find any left on our plates once we’re done eating the pizza. And, it’s great to know that every item on the menu is very good. We’re not always all in the mood for pizza, so the selection of food doesn’t disappoint, and I can say it’s all good….incredible mozzarella sticks(not the frozen kind), great chicken, meaty fries, and delicious salads…something for all of us. The food is consistent with the rest of this establishment, and gets an A+ from us. Famous is a local favorite landmark that rarely disappoints, and Bethel is fortunate to have such a caring family business...
Read moreRead reviews that this is in the running for best pizza in Connecticut. As a lover of pizza, I had to see for myself.
There is street parking but is located in the heart of a busy retail hub. Parking may be an issue. There is a large dine in area on the left as you enter and you are encouraged to sit where you like. I just wanted to buy a few slices without sitting at a table with waitress/waiter service. Thankfully there is a small area to the right with 8 bar stool chairs at a counter looking out into the square. Perfect.
The counter was clean and the seats placed neatly under the counter.
I selected from about 8 different varieties that were on display. My picks, a meatball slice and an onion and pepper slice.
Each slice was $2.50. Adding a 20 oz bottled soda, my bill came to $7.39. I paid with a debit card.
What makes a great pizza slice? Everyone has different criteria. Mine are toppings, taste, texture, value.
The toppings on my 2 slices were tasty and fresh. The crust had a nice texture with a thin crispy surface over a chewy and freshly baked crust underneath. The crust was tasty and could stand on it's own - slightly salty and aromatic - like fresh bread. The toppings and sauce made it all a nice experience. The sauce was flavorful - not too tart, not too sweet. A nice blend. The portion and selection on display however were not quite up to par of some other pizzerias I frequent where there are many pizzas to pick from, all loaded with toppings where it is difficult to fold the slice to eat without using a fork as support the weight from underneath.
However, those slices are usually $4.50, almost $5 each. So, at $2.50 a slice here, even though the size of each slice is small by comparison and the toppings are not piled on top there is still great value.
There is an expansive menu with all kinds of pizzas, salads, wraps, grinders and entrees, all reasonably priced and finally, @ 6 pm on a Friday the place was bustling with activity.
4 out of 5 stars!
