Kings Hat — Restaurant in Billings

Few months LATER update. Placed an order for 2 corndogs. Waited about 20 minutes before walking across the street to get my food. They didnt have an order for me...even though I placed it almost a half an hour ago. "Service" here absolutely SUCKS!

Update: I decided to give them a fair shake. Maybe I was a bit harsh in judging the service.

Um...nope. I spent the last 15 minutes on hold, watching the line clear yet AGAIN! And when she finally got back on the phone, she hung up on me as I was giving my order.

The wife basically begged me for kings hat. I was adamant about not ever going back there. But she convinced me none the less. Mainly because we had family from out of town visiting, and as soon as they heard kings hat they were like "I wouldn't mind trying that."

So...I just hung my head and dialed up the joint. The girl was very soft spoken. But fairly rude. But anyways, we were hungry.

We wanted to order 2 cheese burger baskets, 2 footlong hot dogs, large order of gems and mushrooms, a porkchop sandwich and a steak sandwich, and 4 large bee bops. Needless to say, the family was very disappointed when she hung up on me.

"Well THAT was extremely rude. She didn't even give you time to take a breath."

I looked at her and said, "yeah auntie...that's what they are kinda now known for. They used to be so much better. The food was tasty, hot, and delicious. Now, you'd be lucky if you got your food lukewarm at best."

Everyone looked at me and said, "how about something else?"

So we ended up just going to Wendy's on king Ave east. Family was kinda disappointed, they wanted to try something that they didn't have back home. But as I said, they are kinda now known for dropping the ball.

Spent the last 30 minutes on hold. Even walked across the street to their shop, all the while still on hold. They took at least 6 orders on top of me waiting patiently on the phone. Went in, and was told we will be right with you. All the while still holding on the phone. Probably not going to order from these guys again. Not very good customer service.

Update. I called back after a little bit and asked why I was put on hold for well over a half an hour. Guess what they told me? "Oh, we have a new system in place."

So you mean to tell me that I just sat on the phone, walked over to your shop after 20 minutes on hold, all the while hearing you take order after order after order...just for you to blame it on the new system?

Yeah, she didn't have an answer for me when...

TLDR: If you're willing to wait a long time for alright food at a very low price, it's the place.

I've heard a lot about this place. The first time I went it was taking too long and we needed to leave town, so we figured we'd come back another time. This time it was the lunch hour and I figured it would be busy but was willing to wait. The order was correct and the price was very reasonable, even generous, but I waited 20-30 minutes for my food. The fries were good (tasted like they were made in house, not soggy, a little on the crispy side. I wouldn't go too far out of my way just to get them but they were also hot/made fresh). The flying burger was in a great form, but not the best burger I've ever had. I got it loaded but didn't really feel like it was that substantial (but maybe it isn't meant to be?). It wasn't hot, but was warm enough to eat. Burger overall was okay but not great. The fried mushrooms were scorching hot, as they normally are, and tasted PERFECT. Didn't get any sauce with my order but I didn't ask for any. Finally, the pork chop sandwich was overdone, so much so that it was a little difficult to eat. The breading was a bit burned and it made it hard to chew. It wasn't awful but if I'd had the option to ask them for a less well cooked one, i would have done so. Staff were polite and professional. Overall, a very middling experience. If you're willing to wait for alright food at a low cost, it might be worth it, but it seems to me like if you have to wait for them to make fresh food, your order has to be correct (which it was) and the longer you wait, the better the food has to be (which didn'treally live up to expectations). I'd give it between a 3 and a 3.5, because they did a lot of things right, but it just takes along time and the food is only mostly OKAY. The fried mushrooms and good service bump things up a little, but just not enough for me to really recommend the place. Worst experience. Placed order over phone. When I called sounded like I was speakin with a 12yro. She couldn't get the order correct. I ordered a pork chop sandwich with gems. Not hard to get. The girl told me 5min it would be ready. So I get there and walk up to the door. Instead of walkin in to just grab my order like I use to, you now have to ring the bell. Okay no problem. I ring the bell and literally stand there for 5 to 7min. Finially the little window opens and I can tell by the high pitched voice it's the same lady that took my order. Great ..so I explain I'm here to pick my order up. She looks at my like im speaking a foreign language. I explain I ordered the porkchop sandwich and she looks at me with a blank stare and after a min or so she responds ok hang on and shuts the lil window. So there I wait another 5 to 7min and she comes bk with no food just to take my payment. So I pay and she says okay it'll be one min. And shuts the window again. So I wait and I wait and after about 5min she comes back and tells me it's going to be a few more min before that's done while she is giggling. Like it's funny. Maybe she was nervous but at this point I'm irritated. She closes the windows again and I wait. And wait some more. So finially after 10 more min she comes back with my food. Hands it to me and just stands there looking at me. I look at her and I explained I ordered a coke too. She then snaps out of it and says O yeah lol and turns to grab it. I look inside and I see what looks to be another very young kid manning the grill. Uncomfortably I should add. Smh. Idk what happened to this place or who they sold it too but I want the old kings hat back. It is nothing like it use to be. Food isn't the same either. Im no longer a fan of this place I grew up on for as long as I remember. Soo sad. And to the new owners. U need to find some other workers who know what they are doing or your going to continue to lose customers. Not only that, this place is a legacy. Please Don't...
