The Magpie Bakery offers delicious baked goods, so we were so excited to order a Birthday Cake from them! I’m sad to say we were extremely disappointed. This has nothing to do with how the cake tasted, but it was not decorated well. The writing looked very amateurish. Most bakeries will write Happy Birthday and decorate with iced flowers or balloons. This cake had a tiny, oval shaped decoration, which had a pre-written Happy Birthday, along with the name plainly written in icing. There were no additional decorations. I hate to write a bad review, because I love that we have a great family owned bakery in town and I love to support our small businesses. But for $30, this was a let down. I could have gotten a better decorated cake from stop and shop for half the price.
*Same day update: I spoke to the owner, Melanie and we were able to bring the cake back in. Melanie was very apologetic when we spoke and she personally added balloons to help make the cake more festive. I appreciate her willingness to try and make things right and I can tell that the happiness of customers is important to her. Again, my review was not a reflection on the quality or taste of Magpie Bakery’s goods. I just believe that the presentation does not do an otherwise delicious cake justice, and I expected to see a higher standard from Magpie with regard to decorating a celebratory cake. I’m grateful to have spoken with Melanie, and we will of course continue to enjoy the wonderful addition of Magpie Bakery to Bloomingdale and will never hesitate to send friends and family here when they crave...
Read moreFrom the intimate and beautiful look of the bakery itself (tastefully decorated with all things magpie), the quality of the baked goods themselves, to the swift and easy communication via email and phone call with the owner herself and her staff... you simply can't be disappointed. One might even say "impossible."
With very much a pregnancy-brain, I forgot to order sweets for our baby shower. So on a Thursday before the shower in just 3 days, the Magpie Bakery fulfilled not only on the always-expected "OH BABY!" cookies, but their Key Lime and Raspberry Peach pies barely lasted the entire party. And I can guarantee you the only reason a slice or two of them were left, was because of their Homemade Poptarts and Lemon Bars.
My guests were throwing seconds into their bags of the poptarts and bars before the party was halfway through!! For anyone that was quick enough to have one in their hand by end-of-party, they were encouraging others repeatedly "Holy S*, you MUST take a bite of this!"
Absolutely our go-to bakery for all...
Read moreI fell in love with everything about this rare place. However it's not only Melanie's culinary skills and warmth which rate as exceptional, but her genius in running a lovely establishment that employs the friendliest baristas that keep us returning. Cheryl's smile and willingness to serve with joy makes me feel like I live in a small town where everyone knows me. I crave that as much as the amazing confections. We especially enjoy the lobster claws (sfogliatella), which can be very difficult to make and equally difficult to find, and the flaky spinach feta pastry satisfies our savory yearnings. You will learn that the coffee beans are thoughtfully selected from farms that care and one can order anything from espressos to lavender and vegan lattes. If you are a 'teaist' as I am, you will be enticed to try flavors galore. Thank you for making our world cheerier and more delicious. I hope other establishments strive to appeal to being cheerier as that is even more important to us and sadly seems to be a...
