I honestly don't know how many awesome things I can cram into one review. I was introduced to Alpenhaus early 2023 from a co-worker of mine who recommended them knowing I'm always in the search of a great Reuben sandwich. I wasn't sure what to expect my first time in, but I surely wasn't expecting this level of awesomeness and authenticity. This place is hands down one of the most incredible culinary finds in the treasure valley, if not the entire state of Idaho. Walking in you are greeted by amazing smells, authentic decorations, a wealth of authentic German grocery and refrigerated deli items (all imported, the real deal), big family centric benches, a beer hall (also serving as an evening VIP group gathering area) and then, front and center the main deli and ordering counter. The menu is small (as it should be, this is intentional) serving a small variety of authentic bratwurst dishes, the classic Reuben sandwich, frankfurters, hand made fries, sauerkraut and the -BIGGEST- handmade pretzels you have ever seen. It's. Incredible. The Ruben Sandwich is hands down, with absolutely no hesitation in saying this, one of the most incredible culinary items I have had in my entire life. The flavor and texture of this sandwich is nearly impossible to put into words except really just amazing. Order your selections, grab some incredible imported German brews (if you can even choose because there are literally so many it can give you mild anxiety in the best way possible) and enjoy this one of a kind food and family experience. DISCLAIMER: Alpenhaus is -NOT- a fast food restaurant! Do not, and I repeat, do not- go in here expecting to order and 5 mins later your food arrives. Everything here is made -from scratch - , fresh per order, nothing premade, or anything of the sorts. That is EXACTLY why the quality and authenticity is what it is and whay people know and expect about this establishment. This is not a quick "get in get out" place. This is a sit down and enjoy your time place. And yes, this is also not an inexpensive place either, but the prices are absolutely fair, and especially because nearly everything is imported and carefully made and prepared. Also, on top of everything, the staff and family who runs it are really awesome people. Their hospitality is just about as good as it gets. Alpenhaus will be at the top of my go to destinations for the foreseeable future! 🇺🇲🇩🇪

VERDICT: I highly recommend this place for a good beer off the tap and a schnitzel sandwich. FOOD: The schnitzel sandwich was absolutely delectable. The pretzel buns had excellent sponge and crumb, with perfect density. This prevents the bread from washing out the flavor of the sandwich itself. The mustard cuts through the strata of cucumber, lettuce, onions, and tomatoes. These work to frame the egg-washed pork brightly, keeping the sandwich from being heavy. This pairs well with Weissbier on tap (and their tap menu selection is excellent). Together, they for a fulfilling meal without a post meal nap required. (Also photographed is the Bratwurst on a Brötchen, but I did not eat or taste it, so my review does not factor it into the rating. My dad who lived in Frankfurt, Germany said it's pretty authentic with the bratwurst containing a slightly higher cereal content than US bratwurst. He enjoyed it thoroughly.) As for the pretzel, it had a density higher than that of a Bavarian pretzels around town, with less stretch in the bread before tear, but more of a dense sponge. Flavor and skin were enjoyable, and their coarse ground mustard proved an excellent addition. SERVICE: Good service overall, when you take into consideration how nearly all of it is made fresh. From order-to-food was about 20 minutes, but the quality of the food itself is exceptional. It can take a little time to get your food, so factor a little extra time if you were expecting more deli-speed service. ATMOSPHERE: Feels like a small corner shop. I enjoyed the heavy wood furniture and decor akin to what I'd expect a German deli to look like: flags, dark wood motif, with brighter lighting, glass table with pictures beneath. I'd say they leaned into the motif, but wisely avoided certain stereotypes and less desirable notes such as music (at least that I noticed) or lederhosen...

Even though we are really familiar with German food, for some reason, we have never been into this establishment. Our whole party of four people was blown away! First of all, the schnitzel is incredible. Served over a bed of tasty fries. Called Pommes. Some said that the fries get soggy in the steam under the schnitzel, but I thought they tasted very good, and or covered in coarse salt. Don’t bother asking for ketchup here, they are served with mayo. Give it a try! The curry sausage also taste very authentic, similar to what you might get in Berlin. The four of us shared a giant pretzel and ordered a side of the Bavarian cheese called Obatzta. I may have misspelled that. So the pretzel is excellent with that cheese, or also with a very spicy, grainy mustard that it comes with. There’s a tasty, mayonnaise-based potato salad that they made by hand. Everything seems to be made by hand. Of course, there’s a large selection of beer on tap, and not only Bavarian ones. One person in our party ordered a Berlin white beer with syrup. You can get red or green. Take a look at my pictures of the store. You can get bread, flour, baking mixes, gummy worms in candy, chocolates, pickles, even cosmetic items from Europe. Highly recommend this place, and we will definitely be back! By the way, there are a few tables inside, a few in their wine garden, which is like a bar inside, and then there are a couple tables outside.

I have been wanting to try out Das Alpenhaus since I read about it opening in October of 2016. I rarely get to that side of town, and thus it has taken me over a year to get my butt there. Wow, am I glad I finally checked it out! I had a good excuse to go as my husband complained that we had no hot German mustard to go with the German sausage that I bring back from my hometown in Southern Illinois. I come from a small farm town that was settled in the mid 1800's by a large population of immigrant German's. They have been making the same sausage for our local Wurstmarts for generations. The minute I walked through the doors I could tell by the aroma that I was in the right place; it smelled like heaven! I was immediately greeted by the friendly smilling faces of the two ladies behind the counter. I told them what I was looking for and they said that they would ask the owner if he could reccommend something for me. The very friendly owner came to help me, which was a good thing as they have a large selection of mustards, and I don't read German. His suggestions lead me to pick up the perfect mustard and my husband loved it. I just couldn't leave without finding out what the special of the day was, as they serve a lunch with a featured entree. After texting my hubby about the place and what they featured for lunch, I agreed to pick up a container for takeout. The dish was plenty big for my husband and I to split. It was outrageously delicious!!!!! Top restaurant quality for sure. So the deal is that they have one entree a day, and they post their menu on their website and facebook page. They serve it until they run out. They also have a large selection of deli items, German beers, packaged items, etc, all very authentic German fare. The service was extremely friendly and the place was IMMACULATE. I would have eaten off of their floors, and I don't think I could say that about anyplace else I have ever reviewed. I will definitely be going back, and next time we will all go and sit down to relax and enjoy our meal there. Considering there are very few German restarants in the area, I am extremely happy to see this place. I'm not sure I understand why other reviewers of this place gave only 4 stars, even when they considered this place excellent and had no complaints. It deserves a full 5 stars,...

We went to get dinner and beer for Oktoberfest. At $17 per beer, $20 for a piece of chicken, 2 brats for $19, $10 for pretzels and paid for water, everything brought to the table was cold. It was pretty gross. I was super disappointed. I commented that everything was cold and the waitress completely ignored me. I guess that's just the way. The beer was good. I will never go for food at Oktoberfest again. *I assure the owner that our food was cold. I amend my review to include that the cold food had kraut and potatoes. And mustards. **I actually talked to a couple of people last night who also went to Oktoberfest annually. They said that it was a bad idea to order food. That the food at the deli is very good, but because of the nature of Oktoberfest and how busy it is, they have not had good luck with fest food. Having said all of these things I do find it interesting that the owner will actually tell a customer that spent SO much money on something that they were unhappy with, considering they believe that it could, at best, be an isolated event, that they are lying. Bad business man. If it were me, I'd apologize and ask if I could buy them a beer the next time they decided to come in. I might just contest the charges to my cc now. Moral of the story. I may have tried again, beer not food not at Oktoberfest, and food some other time. The business obviously won't care if there is an issue however, so... good luck. *I was just clarifying my review because of the defensive nature of the response. I was not attacking, I was sharing my experience. I wanted to be CRYSTAL CLEAR as to the interpretation of my experience(considering it was obviously interpreted different than my words spelled out, my clarifications and further responses were because the owner called me a lier a couple of times). Good on ya, owner for coming through with an appropriate response. I'm pretty sad that it went down this way, considering it may have been a better experience with a different response. Prost! I'm glad your event was...
