If you haven’t tried this restaurant yet, you’re definitely missing out! Stop scrolling through opinions from people who might’ve had a bad day and give it a shot. And if you’ve already eaten here, try something new — you might be surprised by a dish you’ve been missing all along. Sometimes, people walk into a Vietnamese restaurant expecting it to taste like Chinese food, and that’s where the disappointment starts. This isn’t Burger King, where you can have it your way. We go out to eat for different reasons, and just like cooking at home, the same dish might taste a bit different from time to time depending on the chef, the timing, or even your own mood.
I’ve been coming here since the day the doors opened. My kids grew up eating here, and now my grandkids love it just as much. Over the years, we’ve tried a variety of dishes — some we loved, some not as much — but that’s just how food works. Everyone’s taste buds are different. The fun is in exploring the menu and discovering your favorites.
People complain about portion sizes or prices, yet don’t blink at paying $7-$8 for a tiny cup of coffee elsewhere. The truth is, this owner works hard to keep prices reasonable despite rising costs for ingredients. Inflation has shut down many restaurants, but he’s still standing, running the kitchen himself most days with just a bit of help. If you’ve ever cooked for a big family gathering, you know how tough that is. Now imagine doing it every day!
The staff here is friendly and calm, and the owner? He’s the kind of person who will create a job just to help someone struggling to find work. That “Help Wanted” sign some people mention isn’t a red flag — it’s a sign of generosity. His team has been with him for years, which says a lot in this industry.
I recommend visiting during a slower time so you can really experience the heart of this place. Watch the owner work the kitchen like a one-man band, talk with him, and see how many customers stop by just to say hello. He remembers names, orders, and preferences like magic.
As for the food, I can’t recommend the Chả Giò and pho soups enough — absolutely delicious! But honestly, the entire menu is worth exploring. Give it a try and judge for yourself. You might just become a regular, like me...
Read moreWhat a wonderful little hole in the wall for delicious, authentic Vietnamese food in Boise. My husband and I met some friends and were able to enjoy a variety of choices from their menu.
For starters, we chose the Goi Cuon or “Spring Rolls” (fresh cooked shrimp, bean sprouts with rice noodles wrapped in rice paper, served with peanut sauce, $11.25). These were fantastic. The ingredients were indeed fresh, and the peanut sauce was absolutely delish. It has a little kick to it but nothing unbearable. Totally recommend.
For entrees, we ordered he House Special Noodles (chicken, beef and shrimp with stir fried veggies and house sauce on top of wheat pan fried noodles, $12.50), Shrimp with Mixed Veggies (Great stir sauce, fresh vegetables and choice of meat, $11.95), Pho Bo Vien (meat wrapped in wonton, seasonal brother and topped with green onions, noodles, shrimp, black mushroom and BBQ pork, $10.25) and one more incredible dish I cannot remember. Out of them all, the House Noodles really took the cake for me. There was just so much going on, so many different combos with each bite and the spices/flavor was absolutely awesome. However, ALL the dishes were GREAT.
Service was perfect! Our waitress was very attentive, informative and most of all patient! We appreciated her so much! I would highly recommend and I...
Read moreThere’s something I’m not used to here in the Gem State - Asian restaurants stepping out of their own cultural lanes to offer dishes of other countries. Each country has distinct flavors and textures.
In this case, I’m pleased with the flavors of Dong Khanh. Historically, there were Chinese communities in Vietnam, so not a stretch of the imagination if Vietnamese restaurants tailored their menus to local Chinese customers.
Here in Boise, it might also help a small business of over 16 years to have a broad and recognizable selection of dishes.
Of the Chinese-themed dishes I had, I enjoyed the flavors – even more than at some local Chinese restaurants. Particularly, there is a touch of spiciness that is not added on as an afterthought – such as adding chili paste that has its own unique taste but may detract from the dish’s own flavor.
I was surprised that rice and noodles took a backseat in how much space they took up on the plate. The rest was meat and generous servings of mixed vegetables.
The beef and chicken seem to be cut thick. For texture, I would have preferred thinner cuts.
The deep fried Chia Gio eggrolls were traditionally Vietnamese.
This is good comfort food in a simple, diner-format restaurant. Very straightforward,...
