Live local to this establishment but last night was our first ever visit, to give it a try. Its a nice place inside. It was pretty dead but it was 4th of July, to be expected. I wish i could remember our waitress name because she was the highlight of our night there. Older woman, very friendly, attentive & just a great waitress. On point, cares a lot & great service. It seems whenever we go out, we get the complete opposite at other places. Like, where is our waitress? Its been 15-20min, am i ever gonna get another drink, etc. The food however, was not the best. A little high priced for what you get too. One of my kids had gotten the chicken tenders & fries. The fries might have been the best tasting food we ordered of the night. My daughter didnt like the chicken & wouldnt finish it. My wife told me to try it & see if it really wasnt good. I did, & it was decent. It was the kind of breading & tasted like chicken you would order from many diners. Like shake and bake. Its a required taste & not like chicken tenders elsewhere. I ordered the Big pig burger. Which was supposed to have jack cheese, breaded onion straws, bacon & bbq sauce. Upon receiving, i was a little unimpressed. I thought it was just a regular cheeseburger because it was all you could see & the bun. When i opened my burger it was just a little sprinkle of onion straws in the middle & bottom had very thin crumpled broken pieces of bacon. It was also missing bbq sauce but our awesome waitress brought out a side of it for me, when i let her know it was missing. Overall, the burger and little portion of fries you get for the price, left a lot to be desired. It did taste good though. I honestly could've gotten a better burger at Chilis or Red Robin where they dont skimp on onion straws and bacon. I did order the burger medium, but it was very rare. I just went with it & ate it though. Cheesesteak rolls, were pretty dry & lacked cheese. I think only one of the 3 i could taste cheese. For $15 too, i think 4 would've been acceptable, instead of 3 little rolls. But thats my opinion. The draft beer was not cold, just a little chilled. When i order a draft beer i want & hope for an ice cold draft. My wifes order was an issue & i hope they understand the seriousness of gluten allergy now. She let our waitress know she has Celiac & gluten allergy. So she ordered the same burger but with gluten free bun & asked to replace the breaded onion straws for regular raw onion instead. Which was no problem & she put in the order just as asked. When she got her burger, she opened it up to also see a small pile of breaded onion straws in the middle. We alerted the waitress about it & she apologized & brought it back to have another one brought out made correctly. A couple minutes went buy & i assume it was one of the cooks, came out with another burger with raw onion on it & apologized for it coming out wrong. Being so quick to come out & looking like the same burger, we asked if it was the same burger. He said yes. You just cant do that! So she told him she cant eat that & i told him she could get very ill. We explained its already contaminated with gluten. Breading & breading grease all over it. He apologized and they went to make another. My wife could've gotten ill. Bloating, diarrhea, fatigue & she is very proned to getting blood blisters/sores in her mouth if she acidentally consumes gluten. It causes the immune system to create antibodies to attack the small intestine. Consuming gluten for a Celiac increases risk of non-Hodgkins lymphoma, small bowel cancer, liver disease. Its apparent mistakes happen but either the business or cooks have to be educated on the importance of understanding gluten free/allergy, for someone with Celiac disease. Overall, not sure if we'd come back. Wife now a little nervous after what happened. That night she wanted a burger but thought the Chicken 65 on the menu looked like it would be really good. Its ashame, because it was a nice place & every employee we had contact with was very friendly. For $130, the food...
Read moreTL:DR - Overall, I think this place needs to go over their menu again. For a place called the Flying Pig, showcase more pig products and rethink the racks for the bacon and pretzel. No one wants to limit their eating space and also block view of their party. Good list of drinks, relaxed atmosphere is a plus.
Only went here once so far and I was expecting something different. The atmosphere is pretty modern and relaxed, but the bar top lighting needs to be dimmed or re thought. I couldn't see the food I was eating because the bar top light was so bright. The aesthetics seems futuristic in this aspect, but then surrounded by more vintage like décor, so the atmosphere is somewhat like Bioshock (video game) themed feeling. The bar keeps seemed kind of confused and not confident in the menu or what the customers needed. My associate and I ordered a Rack of Bacon, which to be told is the only bacon selection in a place called the flying pig. There are bacon additions and add-ons in the remainder of the menu, but only for maybe two items. For a name called the Flying Pig, one would think bacon and pig related products would be prevalent... it is not. The bacon came out on this rack which took up the whole bar space in which I was sitting. The bacon was dripping with sauce and grease and fairly undercooked. The flavor was very good to the bacon, but the consistency was completely chewy and rubbery, so if you don't like thick cut (this was about a good 1/4" cut) then stay away from this "star" appetizer. The drink menu (beer list) was impressive. A list comparable to the famous UNOs beer list. Filled with interesting IPAs, stouts and lagers, they'll more than likely have something that tickles your fancy. The next thing I ordered were the Carolina Reaper wings. When the wings came out, I took one bite and these wings were way too hot. Yes I know, Carolina Reaper, hottest pepper in the world. Here is the thing. I make my own hot sauce, I dabble in the pepper industry and have the buds for a high heat index. Now I may be out of practice with tolerance to heat, but ... I'm almost certain these wings were made with pure extract, which is not good for direct consumption. I've had the worlds hottest gummy and these wings were almost on par with that. They need to either dilute their "sauce" or extract, flavor it, because it was just straight puree and then these wings should suffice for consumption. The barkeep told me, "oh yes people love the reaper wings" in the most unconfident and unconvincing manner. Keep practicing those acting skills (no offense - he was a very nice guy and very kind). They gladly took the wings off of my check, which was nice, since I could only eat one. I noticed the wood fire stove in the back of the restaurant, so next time I think I might order a pizza and write another review. Although I did some pictures from other reviewers for the pizza and it didn't look like the prettiest thing aesthetically, but nonetheless this will be next to try. Read moreWhen we saw this restaurant was opening, we were really excited to have a new small, locally-owned place to eat in town. The first thing I will say is that the atmosphere was really great; I could imagine coming to hang out at the bar with friends for a game or something. The inside has come a long way and it's beautiful; I love the light fixtures and the bar setup! Additionally, the staff was really welcoming and pleasant and the service was exceptional; our waitress was lovely and we had absolutely no issues in that regard.
That said, the food was pretty rough. I've never experienced this before, which is why it was so shocking, but I'm confident that more than half the food on our table was frozen, canned, or pre-made. Based on the quality, I wouldn't be surprised if all of it was. I am 100% sure that the brussels sprouts were frozen. I'm no chef, but I make them at home frequently and I know them when I see them. I'm also positive that the beans that came with the fish tacos were canned. I use those at home as well, so I recognize them. I'd also be willing to bet that the rice was either instant or boiled in a bag, based on the texture and taste. As for the crispy fish tacos, they were very chewy because the fish was overcooked, the breading was soggy (most likely because it was pre-made), and the tortillas were raw; if you're going to use flour tortillas (which is its own debate), you have to at least crisp them a bit on the stove top. We also ordered a side of tator tots that, again, I'm positive were frozen. The food came out very fast, but it's clear that was because it was not fresh or made-to-order.
I rarely write reviews like this. Normally I write reviews when restaurants are so good that I can't forget about them; and when restaurants are bad, I just move on and don't return. However. It is unethical to serve customers frozen, canned, or pre-made food at restaurant prices. We spent more than $70 for two people and the food was awful. I understand supply shortages, but if you cannot get fresh brussels sprouts, take them off the menu. If you cannot take the time to cook dried beans fresh, take them off the menu. If you cannot make fish tacos to order for whatever reason, take. them. off. the. menu. It is so wrong to serve people frozen or canned anything in a restaurant setting at restaurant prices.
I'm sorry to write such negative comments because I know this place is new, but there is no excuse for serving frozen and canned food to customers. It is completely unacceptable. If this restaurant wants to survive in the same town as Old Towne Pub, Marcello's, Under the Moon, The HOB, and even the Cool Cricket, they're going to have to up the quality and serve fresh, made-to-order food. It's not going to matter how great the service or atmosphere is after the shiny-new-toy effect wears off. You're competing with fresh, made-from-scratch tator tots from OTP and some of the best wings in the area from Cool Cricket. That's the energy you need to match. Frozen and canned food is offensive coming from a restaurant, and it's not going to cut it....
