I dropped in to order a gyro to go. The guy taking my order at the counter was polite, but I wouldn't say he was friendly.
There was one customer who was dining in and another came in to pick up a to go order, so not busy. The place was filthy! Dirty tables, trash on the floor and the floor looked like it had caked on grime from days gone by. Thankfully, it didn't smell bad (or good, either). But, I should have turned around and walked out when I saw the condition of the place. This is supposed to be a Greek restaurant, but some of the decor and food items were middle eastern. The middle eastern flair became evident when I bit into the "gyro" and that was far from pleasant - and I love curry!
The gyro was disgusting. I took 2 bites and nearly lost it. I am a foodie and very adventurous with my eating experiences . This monstrosity was drenched in some sort of yellow oil - the pita was literally soggy and full of this oil that left a tick residue on the roof of my mouth. The meat was tough and it was soaked in turmeric/curry spice that completely covered the flavor of the meat. Not in any way was this Greek, not by any stretch of the imagination. It's probably a good thing I couldn't taste the meat in this case because I wondered if it was spoiled. 2 bites was way too much. The curry flavor was so unpleasant because it was supposed to be a gyro. I normally live curry, but not in my gyro. Zero Tatziki sauce, just drenched in oil and some curry/tumeric. The onions were cut way too thick.
I really dislike leaving this kind of review for small local businesses. But, this isn't ok. I spent $16 on this nastiness along with a small bottle of water and small tip. Aside from a reallly bad gyro, what got me most was my concern about the health and safety due to the condition of the place. It was a big waste of money, but also a hit to my health and wellness. Hopefully, they can turn it around with some desire, some work, and some...
Read moreStopped in for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. The reviews on Yelp alternate between 5 stars and one stars which is odd. I really wanted a chicken kabob pita sandwich, but it wasn't available so I got a chicken kabob plate instead. It was good, but not what I was expecting: instead of kabob type chunks, there were two long, rectangularly shaped, nicely spiced, kind of fried pieces of sort of but not quite gyro meat. The plate came with a very nice, warm, soft pita with creamy, delicious hummus; long-grained, yellow, lightly infused spiced rice (with a few raisins, a dried red Szechuan-style chili pepper, and a whole clove); and a small side Greek salad.
Hubby got the Chicken and Gyro plate which had small chunks of beef gyro (not slices), larger chunks of chicken and the same sides as mine. Both of his were tasty and I was surprised to learn when I asked that the chicken was shawarma as it was not necessarily as spicy-saucy as most shawarmas I've had. The menu has Shawarma in a sandwich which is what I'll probably get next time, though I might like to try the Babaganoush or maybe the falafel plate with tzatziki, or...
PS I had more trouble than usual communicating as the guys don't speak English very well and didn't understand my questions. This made being a first-timer a little hard, but I don't think I can go too wrong no matter what I decide so the lack of a common language is...
Read moreBecause of all their 5-Star reviews, I drove from Gig Harbor to Bremerton last Sunday to try Gyro Star for the first (and now LAST) time. My experience with this restaurant was very disappointing. I called in my order beforehand and could barely hear the guy taking my order. When I arrived, the cashier’s body language told me he would rather be somewhere else as he was not friendly nor appreciative towards me or any of the other customers in line before me. When it was my turn, he proceeded to ring up my order incorrectly, Fortunately, I did end up getting exactly what I ordered since he inadvertently charged me for an entrée that was less expensive than the one I ordered, which of course, I didn’t realize until I opened the containers after I got home. The food I ordered was mediocre at best. Although the Greek Salad, Hummus, and Pita Bread were alright, my Kafta Kabob was not very good. It came with very dry Rice Pilaf and the Kabab itself was plain and too chewy. The Stuffeed Grape Leaves (Dolmas) were okay but most certainly nothing special. My experience at this restaurant made me wonder how many of those 5-Star Google Reviews posted on their Google listing are actually legitimate. The next time I want Greek Food, I’m sticking with Ikonos in Gig Harbor because their food tastes better and because their prices are...
