Update: I went back here in March 2025 as I was back in CT, and tried another dish, this time the Waakye rice and beans with shito sauce and tomato. HOLY MOLY. It was so good that I was wondering, what else could they make that was godlike? I decided to find out - I was flying back to Los Angeles the next day, so I got 4 more dishes to bring home - from okra stew to spinach sauce to jollof to more egusi. I froze them so I could get them on the plane, and packed up some banku and fufu to go with it. Back home in L.A., I defrosted them, and they are all completely amazing - way better than anything we have here, and we have a much larger population. This place is absolutely brilliant, and a national treasure. And I cannot believe it's in Bridgeport, Connecticut!
I am a bit speechless, but allow me to try. I'm from Los Angeles, and every time I come to visit family SW Connecticut and they take me out to eat, I shudder, as maybe 1 out of 100 restaurants in the area are even competent. So I had little hope for this one. Imagine my surprise as I picked up the menu and saw how deep it was - with not just fufu and yam, but konkote and banku. I got an egusi with cow's foot and goat, and holy moly that was the best egusi I've had in my life - so many layers of taste, with spice and stinky fish and the love of a dozen generations coming together to make a bowl of heaven on earth. And for drinks, they had superspicy ginger coconut juice, and not-too-sweet Guinness Malta. The chef Laudina - also server and owner - is very kind and knowledgeable, and can talk to you about the differences between the dishes and her choices, and I am only sad that she is 3,000 miles away, because Veronica's Kitchen and Nkechi have nothing on her in Los Angeles. Her restaurant was more satisfying and complex of an experience than many Michelin-starred places I've been to in years, at a fraction of the price. She, and this, is a...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of dining at SAFARI 77 in Bridgeport, CT, and I must say it's hands down the best African restaurant I've ever been to! The food is incredibly authentic and flavorful, with dishes that transport you straight to the continent. But what truly sets this place apart is the exceptional service - the staff is warm, welcoming, and attentive, making you feel like family.
From the tender and juicy suya to the rich and spicy jollof rice, every bite is a delight. And don't even get me started on the fufu and soup - it's like a taste explosion in your mouth!
If you're looking for a truly authentic African dining experience, look no further than SAFARI 77. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. 5 stars isn't enough - I'd give it 10 stars if I could! Keep up the fantastic work, and I'll be back...
Read moreWhoever said egusi is good they lied! It smells and taste like horse poop mixed with hay! Like it smells like manor! First my order was stolen on Uber and I should've took that as a sign but I didn't, I reorder after my refund and was very disappointed 😡.
I received a phone call from the business about my review, just wanted to inform my viewers that I was not saying anything in reference to the restaurant itself, but I am saying I wouldn't recommend ordering the "egusi" from this specific place In reference to my experience after my received order. I never tried anything else to make any other review. Not trying to knock the restaurant everyone has they own...
