Eat here …learn Spanish. This was a cultural immersion.
There are many of these cafeteria style Mexican cafés in the heart of Tulsa’s Little Mexico area. I have avoided them. My problem is that I look at the heated buffet displays, with trays of very similar looking bubbling caldrons of marinating Mexican meats and vegetables and I have no idea what they are. Without pictures and English descriptions, it is just confusion,
The new El Gallo Loco #2 in Broken Arrow is such a restaurant. Fortunately, upon entering, the friendly Roberto greeted my wife and I, and guided us through the food ordering process. He pointed and explained the many offerings behind the buffet’s protective glass. I only remember one the Carne Asada, because he offered a free sampling. He also emphasized the very large corn tortillas that are made fresh in the restaurant. Steak and a tortilla. I believe that could be called a taco. That’s what we had; rice and beans on the side.
The tortilla was indeed the size of the plate, folded in half and filled with savory, charcoal grilled, chopped steak. Using what little room was left in the folded tortilla, I filled with tomatoes, onions, cilantro and lettuce from the help yourself condiment bar. Salsa completed the taco construction. Some green and a good helping of the orange/red liquid hell. The taco had now swelled to a sized that was unmanageable as hand held food. That is what forks are for. Not much for the kitchen staff to clean up. The plates were clean when we left.
The chargrilled chopped steak was delicious. The experience was interesting. I’m looking forward to sampling the other authentic Mexican food options, bubbling behind the protective plexiglass.
As we were leaving, Miguel, the owner checked on us. He was interested in our feedback on the visit and encouraged us to come back and try more.

Read moreWent here for the first time today. I wasn't sure what to expect as I had never been to the other location. Upon entering, we were asked it was our first time and they gave us a rundown of the buffet and menu items. We went with the normal plate with carne asada and chicken. It came with rice and beans and a huge tortilla. It was great! The flavors were wonderful, the beans and rice very nicely seasoned and cooked, and the chicken was crispy skinned and had a good kick of heat. The prices were decent as well. The staff were very friendly and helpful right from the beginning and until the end when we were done, they checked on us and got us a to go bag. The only thing to be wary of, if you are like me and don't typically purchase soft drinks or anything, I typically just drink tap water at restaurants, El Gallo Loco does not have tap as an option, so if you wish to drink, you need to purchase bottled water or other drinks. Having said that, they have a pretty nice selection of drinks to choose from and the bottles of water are about a 1-litre size, so its not bad. Other than this, it was a great visit and I will certainly be...
Read moreI'm torn so here is my honest critical review... their system is confusing to me, they want to be a taco truck... but not a taco truck... The food was very good! meats were well flavored and their tortillas were home-made. I just think it was a bit expensive, as 2 of us ate dinner here and it costs us $37. The food we tried all tasted good and was good quality, but we had a difficult time ordering, because the menu was hand-written in spanish, yet it only listed platters. So, if you want tacos, they make you get a taco platter, with three tacos, rice, and beans.. but there is no offering for a single burrito or taco, like you might get at a typical taco truck. I feel like im made to buy rice and beans we dont really want. So, if i want a big meal, i might go back, but if I want a single burrito, Im most likely still going to go to the mexican grocery store a mile to the west.... because there a taco is 1.50... where here, if you order a taco you would get 3 of them with beans and rice for $13. (side note- the place was very clean.... unusually clean, and...
