Nice area to eat in, very friendly owner, pretty good and filling ramen for a chilly day. As someone who really enjoys ramen and has enjoyed most spots in indy and several from out of state i will give my critique.
Best part of the ramen was the protein. The pork and beef were actually delicious! Pork cut nice and tasted great. The beef had a really good flavor that suprised me
The egg was good but slightly overcooked. I suggest going for the perfect soft boil. The egg tasted like it was marinated in the soy sauce as one would expect. However i think it either needs to be marinated a little bit longer or the marinate be a little stronger! Im no expert just my opinion. Overall still good.
As for the miso broth it was ok! But from my experiance i like a thicker broth, the consistency of a ramen broth is a big tell. I found the consistency to be quite thin ( watery) rather than thick and it was reflected in the taste. Shoyu ramen is something expected to be more thin or switching gears, pho is usually more thin and watery but when it comes to ramen, love to see those thick consistency broths with tonkotsu and miso.
Lastly and i think my biggest gripe was the noodles. The thickness of the noodles and their texture was great! My issue was the broth did not "grab" and "stick" to the noodles. They stood out each bite from the flavor of the other ingredients because well they did not have the flavor of them. They just had noodle taste instead of that noodle flavor coated with delicious broth, it felt more of a chore to get them out of the way.
For a brand new ramen spot here in indy on the west side it is a solid place for a hot bowl of ramen that is cozy with good friendly service. I think first time ramen eaters will love this spot. But to compete with some of the best ramen in indy or impress people who really love the dish will take some time and adjustments!
Would give another shot...
Read moreMiso ramen is good and worth trying. Generous portion sizes and a good amount of ramen toppings you'd expect. The pork was the star of the show, it was cooked better than any other place I've tried before, even Mitsuwa, and fell apart in my chopsticks. 🥢 The simmered pickle slice (?) added in with the bowl was unexpected in a good way and incredibly flavorful too.
The broth could have had a slightly more... sophisticated?... flavor profile and thickness, it was like a (considerably) better version of those Maruchan microwavable noodle blocks by flavor and thickness. This seems to be standard around the Indy area and isn't a bad thing, just isn't mind blowing and would love to see a more original, refined house broth in the future
The boba milk tea was great and made really well, I tried both matcha and taro. If you've never had either, I would really recommend giving either a shot, personal favorite is taro! The tapioca pearls were prepped excellently and didn't get weird and soggy even after leaving it in the cup for ~2hr.
The guy who took our order was SO friendly and funny, definitely made the experience memorable and would consider going back again for his inviting and joking personality even if the food wasn't as great as it was. 😁
All together I'm still sad to have seen Ho Wah go, it was the only good Chinese option in town, but equally I'm so happy to have a solid ramen/boba place in town and not have to drive around to find a decent dish. Prices are slightly cheaper than other similar quality shops around the Indy area which is...
Read moreI have been a chef for over 35 years and the only reason that I am stating this is to say that I have been blessed and fortunate to have had the ability to travel extensively with my career and also experience the taste and culture of many cuisines. Asian food has always been a go-to and one of my favorites. Although, they have unfortunately become very Americanized and very hard to find. However, there are still a few family owned and operated ones that are very authentic and that you may stumble upon if you are "lucky". Well, I must say that I have become one of those "lucky" ones. I own a restaurant in Greenwood Indiana and often travel approx. 35-40 minutes every Monday ( my only day off ) to visit this location. Not only is the ambiance warm, well decorated and very welcoming, the price is extremely reasonable for the quality and portions, but more importantly they make you feel like family as soon as you enter the door. The cuisine is incredibly "Tasty" as in its name and consistent every single time I visit. This is a hidden gem that truly needs to be known and supported. You will not be disappointed, it is...
