La Botana Grill — Restaurant in Brownsville

Food is good. Service is hit or miss. Usually mediocre at best, sometimes bad. Atmosphere is non existing. It feels like you are eating in a warehouse with music on TV. They have very angry signs making you aware that they charge extra for everything that is normally complimentary in all other restaurants. Chips are brought in a bag, about enough for one person. I've been there with one other person and we got one bag of chips. The last time it was 5 of us and yes, we got one bag of chips. Red and green salsa are both very good. They decided that if you are paying with a credit card, they will pass that charge on to you. Again very rare for a business to do that. I dont want to give them any ideas but im surprised they haven't figure out a way to pass part of their lease to customers as well. Their signs indicating all these thing are written...

Terrible. Terrible. Terrible. Stay away. Response: OK, we went in one night with family of mine who were out of town. We sat down and ordered and were eager to eat. 20 minutes passed by and the waiter brought out two, cold cups of beans and one basket of tostadas. We were a group of 8 people. Then the waiter said it'd be a wait of 15 more minutes. 20 minutes more passed by and still nothing. We were upset and hungry. We were going to pay for the drinks we had ordered and cancel everything else. The old looking man didn't apologize or ask why. He said ok and charged us the drinks and we left. AUTHENTIC! Great place overall: service, respectfull & fast!; food, varied & tastefully Mexican! (corn tortillas were hand made!); clean, tables & floors very clean (restrooms too!); cost, very reasonable. We had frijoles especial with beef, cheese, & aguacate to start (salsas were spicy); then mom had caldo de rez, the cook cut the beef & veggies into bite-size bits mom could eat (Thanks cook!). I had six bistec tacos which were full & so tasty, especially with salsa. The atmosphere was respectful & family friendly! Mom settled for a dulce de calabaza for dessert. The only gripe was the uninvited house fly the friendly & patient waitress took care of quickly. Been here before, will return often, with friends!...
