While my wife and I currently reside in Houston, we both grew up in Brownsville, Texas (so we both love the RGV quisine!!) and thus were very familiar with the Toddle Inn Restaurant. Since most of my immediate family still lives in the Brownsville area, my wife and I often spend time there during the Holidays and other special occasions. Given our past positive experiences, my wife and I frequently stop by the Toddle Inn for breakfast or lunch. In all the years we have been visiting the Toddle Inn, neither of us have ever been disappointed in this restaurant. From the greeting with a smile that we receive at arrival, to the great service and tasty food...we became loyal customers a long time ago. While there are many tasty menu items, my personal favorites are the Carne Guisada Plate, El Valle Plate, and the Mexican Plate. While each of these plates comes with rice and your choice of beans, I always add their delicious fresh flour tortillas to my order as well. Their breakfast dishes have also always been top notch. Furthermore, during the Christmas Holidays of 2023, my wife and I were introduced (by Toddle Inn's very own Mark Perez), to Churro Waffles. All I can say is wow!! Mark advised that they were the first to not only serve these, but believes they actually invented them (neither myself, nor my wife, had ever heard of them). I would highly recommend them to anyone who likes the taste of a Churro. However, now imagine that taste, in the form of a waffle, along with a generous layer of syrup!!
So what makes this place so unique? In addition to the Churro Waffles, one key item for me is that the food served here is just like the great home cooking that I grew up on...always tasty and always served fresh. My wife and I both agree strongly that there are many restaurants in Brownsville, and while many are pretty good, Toddle Inn is one of the best. One top of all that, at Toddle Inn, we have always felt like we were getting excellent value for our money (not so common in these post COVID days). Therefore, in our eyes, this place is win - win on all counts...just get there before their 2:00 pm closing time (they do...
Read more**Edit..since the owner (or whomever runs their Google page) told me not to "exaggerate" the cost of 2 gorditas..I will clarify and upload a pic of my bank charge - 2 gorditas and a glass of orange juice cost me 20 DOLLARS (still not worth it) at this establishment. I gave a 5 dollar tip to the server because it was not her fault the food tasted so bad that we couldn't finish it. I never blame shit food on a good server and will always ensure to tip.
Giving 3 stars only because everyone on the staff was so friendly and looked well put together but the food was definitely a 1 star. We drove from Harlingen to Brownsville specifically to try out this place based on good reviews and were very disappointed. We both ordered gorditas and could barely force down half of them. My barbacoa was shear fat and tasted old. My gordita was soaked in so much oil that when I left, I tasted oil in my throat for nearly an hour.
Normally, I don't rate a restaurant so low based on one dish as I usually go back and try something else on the menu but I don't think I'll be doing that given that it is a smaller restaurant with far too many tables for it's size. The lady sitting behind me kept bumping my chair (to no fault of her own, we were just crammed in there like sardines) and it was so loud in there that I could not even hear the conversation at my own table. My advice is do not come with a large party and don't waste your money on their gorditas. 25 dollars for 2 gorditas is a bit much...

Ordered chicken fajitas, was brought a flat piece of overcooked beef. told the server, I ordered chicken. She said we don’t have chicken. I asked her to bring the menu and I showed her. She said we only have chicken breast. I said, that’s what you make chicken fajitas from. She says no that’s for the chicken sandwich special. I said why can’t you grill the chicken cut it into strips for fajitas. She says I don’t know that’s what the kitchen says.?????? Never got the tortillas left most of the steak because it was too tough to chew. Our friend ordered quesadilla appetizer the server said chicken? She thought OK. When she got the bill, she was charged the quesadilla meal and was charged extra for the chicken. And it wasn’t even a typical quesadilla three little folded tortillas About 2 inches diameter with melted cheese and one piece of chicken each for 1799. She questioned it the server played dumb. Two others ordered the chicken sandwich special that came with fries. One person received the fries on their plate the other one didn’t. The server said nothing. Then, because there were eight of us, they automatically added in the tip. They estimated the tip based on the tax included.
Tipping should never be based on the tax...
