I’m updating my review.
I received contact recently. Case isn’t closed but there’s a pending resolve on the matter that I’m waiting for patiently.
We ordered a large red velvet custom cake for my bubbie’s 80th bday. It was amazing. Fast forward we ordered a cake for my birthday the same red velvet and, well, it was super dry. We tried purchasing again, and it was sweeter than usual and had the wrong design.
Fast forward from that, I urged my family to visit, again with me although they were not too eager since they’ve already made up their mind. While I was here, I bought one pastry from all their cases, and I continually did that biweekly to the point where I signed up for their point system so I make use of my constant purchase. We travel 2 hours to-and-fro when coming here. I was really amping myself to love the place. Actually, their plain croissant and sourdough bread are pretty good. You also can’t beat the black coffee price.
That said, on October, we purchased 3 cakes to be picked up on the 11th. I was so nervous because during our tasting of the small cakes behind the glass, deciding which base we wanted for our ordered cakes, we informed an associate that one of the slices we ate was stale and dry (reminiscent of the custom birthday cake purchased a few years ago precovid). She explained that the glass cases are coolers and that the cupcake we ate was “dry” because it needed to rest first. 1) that makes no sense and 2) the cakes we purchased behind the window, sat for about 20+ minutes on our table while I chose 2 dozen baked items on their stands.
When we picked up our ordered cakes, the writing was sloppy. I was told by the person who took our order that everything would fit on the cake. It didn’t, and good thing I foresaw that and gave a shorter alternative should it not fit.
The grand finale came when we ate the cake. One of the 3 cakes was to celebrate my bubbie’s 93rd. She choked on a piece of material left embedded in the cake. While another cake that I expected was baked in a heart-shaped mold, was actually shaped using the icing. Meaning some guests received slices that were 90% icing (the ones that received a slice from the “V” end of the heart shaped cake).
I reached out to Deerfield and someone named Kim responded. It’s now November 12, a whole month from the incident, and I still didn’t hear back from them. I even sent a query on update...
Read moreI have been a customer for over 40 years and unfortunately their customer service in the bakery has deteriorated so much that I will not shop there again. I went in on Saturday to buy an assortment of cakes for dinner guests. 3 customers were waiting and about 4 staff were having a chat in the back. Let me just say there was a total lack of enthusiam to serve customers and we were all made to feel like we were imposing on their day. Eventually one lady was waited on and her server asked for more help. I selected my cakes being very specific that i did not want any cakes with nuts due to a nut allergy. I repeated the request for no nuts, the order was packed, paid for and I left - unfortunately I didn't look in the boxes before leaving the store. When I served the cakes that evening I found that they had given me brownies with nuts sprinkled on top which had spread over everything I had purchased making them inedible for me. I went back to the bakery on Sunday to explain my upset about the nuts and found the staff to be uncaring but they did offer me a refund on the returned cakes with no apology other than saying they don't guarantee nut free. I accept that in most places there is a possibility that machinery was used that contain nuts. I can usually deal with this but not with actual nuts on the items. Although I was given a refund for the items I returned (partial order), I had expected an apology and some compassion. I found the staff rude and customers were made to feel like they were an imposition. What happened to this wonderful bakery? I feel I should have received a full refund of the $25 I spent and not just $9 to cover what I returned. (Some of my guests ate some of the cakes and I had thrown some away). I also think a gift card or discount would have been nice too. Because the nuts had spread everywhere I was unable to eat anything (cupcakes, cookies etc). Sorry Deerfields, but I won't be shopping in your bakery again - I accept your overpriced items because of the quality of the food but I am not willing to accept rudeness, attitude and lack of...
Read moreOrdered a cake online for my mother's 85th birthday. I could have gone to Mariano's but decided that for this special event I would order from a dedicated bakery. What a mistake.
The cake was encased in a one inch thick layer of buttercream making it way too sweet for human consumption. The cake (sponge) was dry and flavorless. And I was charged $45, twice what I could have ordered from Mariano's (which would have been better quality).
I served the cake and watched my family members scoop the sponge off the barrier of buttercream. Every plate came back with a huge gob of buttercream on it. Not only did I not receive any compliments on the cake, nobody wanted to take any home.
I went to bakery in Buffalo Grove to lodge a complaint. The assistant manager (don't know where the manager was) said I had to bring the cake in. Eyeballing the remainder of the cake would not tell her how poorly it tasted. She was trying to obfuscate the issue as I was requesting restitution for their over-priced bakery block. The cake was cut up and frozen and I refused to jump through this unnecessary hoop.
I tried to call Deerfield's main number only to get bounced around their voicemail system without the ability to talk to a human being. I also emailed customer support and did not get a response.
What really gets my goat was that I wanted to make this a day to remember for my mother who does not have many birthdays left. Too bad the memory she will have will be that of a lousy, expensive cake.
So don't buy anything at Deerfields unless you want over-priced, low quality baking goods with poor...
