We were pleased to see a new Chinese fast casual restaurant open in Burke. We ordered the General Tso Chicken, Pork Lo Mein, Pork Fried Rice, Crispy Beef, Cashew Chicken and fried dumplings. As no peppers are native to China (all of the varieties you find today were introduced to China 350 years ago from the Americas) I've often found jalepenos present as a mild pepper catering to westerners in Chinese dishes. The Chinese-American dish, General Tso chicken from Hunan Cafe had jalepenos, and it was delicious. The crispy fried chicken and slightly sweet sauce was perfectly complemented by the mild heat of the jalepenos. My children even, who don't prefer their food to be too spicy, liked it. I've seen jalepenos used in the hot pepper chicken dish at Mama Chang as well, which is a Peter Chang restaurant. So the presence of this pepper is more common than one would think, in authentic Chinese cuisine. The dumplings were very good, the lo mein was delicious as was the pork fried rice and cashew chicken. The crispy beef was another highlight, with lightly crisp fried beef strips and sauteed vegetable shreds with a deliciously salty brown sauce. The highlight of all was the General Tso, which Hunan Cafe differentiates with the mellow heat of jalepenos. When I go back, I will be ordering this dish again. Hunan Cafe is a great addition to our...
Read moreI recently visited Hunan Cafe during their grand opening, eager to explore their offerings and support a new business. Unfortunately, my experience fell significantly short of expectations. Despite the excitement and potential, the food did not meet the standard I had hoped for from a restaurant celebrating the rich flavors of Hunan cuisine.
The dishes I tried lacked the depth of flavor and authenticity that are hallmarks of Hunan cooking. For instance, the noodle dish I had was overly bland, not as spicy as expected. Additionally, the mixed vegetable dish also contributed to a less-than-satisfactory dining experience.
Understanding the challenges new restaurants face, especially during their opening phase, I believe Hunan Cafe has significant room for improvement. The kitchen needs to revisit and possibly revamp their recipes to ensure they offer dishes that truly represent the vibrancy and richness of Hunan cuisine. Service and ambiance was blah, but the culinary experience is crucial for a restaurant's success.
I hope my feedback is received in the constructive spirit it's intended. I believe that with some adjustments and a focus on authentic, flavorful dishes, Hunan Cafe has the potential to become a beloved spot for Hunan cuisine enthusiasts. I look forward to revisiting in the future, hopeful for a vastly improved...
Read moreWe first came in we were greeted warmly bye Jenny the hostess. As a family feel and is a lovely place to take everyone that you care about because the food is prepared with love and good intention. I was indecisive about what I wanted to eat but Jenny was so wonderful and came out and helped me pick out a unique meal that was catered just to my taste. This place truly has the essence of a family oriented dining Bonanza. With a humble appearance they truly indulge when it comes to the quality of their food and service. You can see they do a step above everyone else because they take the time to prepare the food and a manner that's going to be healthy for you. I recommend this highly to anyone who is looking for a good meal with their family that's going to actually be good for their bodies as well. This is truly a treat. Freshly made and...
