My ate here with friends last summer. She couldn’t say enough good things about it so when we were asked to go out for dinner by different friends I was excited about trying this place. Wow! What a disappointment! Our waiter was polite, yet appeared very undertrained.he left menus with us but didn’t ask if we wanted drinks. Which I found unusual. But no big deal at this point. After awhile we started wondering where he was. After 10 minutes or so, he finally appeared. We placed a drink and appetizer order. Then he disappeared. Finally got our appetizers, then disappears….again. And when I say he disappears, it was for 10 minutes at a time. Finally the couple we were with got their drinks. My wife and I did not. When I asked the bartender about our drinks, she actually said to me “no you didn’t, I don’t have an order for you”. A more appropriate answer, in my opinion would have been, let me check on it. Not to tell me I didn’t order drinks. Then it couldn’t have been two minutes later she brought my wife’s drink to her. She said “ Oh, it’s been sitting there awhile”. Man did I have to bite my tongue!!! Finally get to order our meal. I had the shrimp with asparagus. It was good, but for the price I felt that they could have thrown a few more on there. Finally finish our meal, get our bill and there is $7 on mine for chicken and dumpling soup. Which I don’t order. The other couple with us ordered that, then everyone looks at each other and almost at the same time stated that she didn’t even get her soup. The waiter said he’d remove it from my bill. He comes back. It’s still on there. He again says he will remove it from my bill. He comes back. It’s like Groundhog Day. It just keeps happening!!! He finally gets it taken off. I put in my chip card and the tip screen comes up. And I’m thinking there’s no way I’m leaving a tip. But I had a weak moment and did a custom tip that I felt was more than adequate for the poor service and argumentative bartender. All in all, I do not blame our waiter for this bad experience. I blame the manager or trainer for this poor kid. He was obviously poorly trained and thrown out into the woods to wing it on his own. Will I ever go back? Probably not. For the price we paid, I could have gone to other places in Burlington where I’ve had better...
Read more3.5/5: went here for the first time after hearing others talk about it. Parking nearby can be challenging unless you know where to look, especially on busy evenings. The restaurant itself is separated into three distinct areas: a full dining hall/ lounge on the second floor, a bar/eating area on the street entrance (the "barcade") with a nice outdoor patio in the back, and a market adjacent to this. We opted for dining on the second floor, and were seated at a large, spacious table. The pretzel we had as an appetizer was very large, and our meals (spatzel & cheese, reuben, pork schnitzel) came out promptly. We also ended with desserts (cheesecake, macaroons, cinnamon pretzel), so it was a lot of food. I felt like it had a very clean, modern atmosphere with attentive service and lots to offer. The quality of everything we had was top-notch, and everyone was very nice. Even the manager came by to see if everything was ok. However, I struggle with what it's trying to be. Most German restaurants I've been to are darker, louder, and have a vibrant atmosphere. This is more like a high-end, lavish American eating establishment that has some German items thrown in. For example, while it makes it's own beer in some German styles (altbier, hefewizen) it doesn't offer Spaten, Paulaner, or Ayinger (that I could see). They have Jager and Rumplemintz, but they're buried in a wide variety of high-end cocktails and whiskeys. Same with their menu, seems to be a mix of both American & German staples. And it can be a little pricey, it was $110 for the 3 of us without drinks. Quick detour to say that the Poppie's market is just odd. It offers both things you would expect such as meats, cheeses, & condiments but then goes off in a different direction entirely with things like laundry items, milk, and cat food. Is it trying to appeal to people that live downtown? There's a Walgreens that offers all these things about half a mile away. Overall, it is a place that I would go to again, especially to sample their beers downstairs and trying something else on the menu. It's just not going to be at the top of my list...
Read moreMy first experience at the busted was good at the ground floor bar, that is where the good came to an end. Several days before my second visit I made a reservation for new years. After those several days my reservation was canceled with no response to my inquires to if a private party was taking over the restaurant or if walk ins were welcome. We chose to give the place a try anyway . On arrival the upstairs was very loud, but seems to be the room. Plenty of seats available. The waitress was so distracted by her radio, and it was so loud in the room I had to repeat my drink order 5 times and then when I pointed I had to cover other choices on menu to get it right. The waitress complained to us about how the kitchen is always in her ear..
The food, the bacon flight was no where near the quality as the the first time I was there including the cabbage.
Don't go unless you like pork, pork, or pork, or one fish option.
The pork was very bland. But had just been boiled and left. The tuna was very strong smelling. To me it is old fish. The sauce again had little flavor and was bland.
We had the cast iron desert. Other than the malt flavor of the breading the icecream was the only saving grace and other than the shape it was probably ice milk. The worst part, rhe absolutely worst part is when the amount of the check was announced at the table. For everyone to hear. NEVER, NEVER have I heard of anyplace doing that. Then the computer was thrust into my face to put a tip in. Wow, Never have I left a long review like this and never have I had such a list of terrible events in one visit. We won't even talk about the cashier at the meat market rubbing her nose while checking us out or her inability to get the cash register to work, or her shaking so badly she...
