Umi Sushi&Grill — Restaurant in Byron Township

Came in and tried this restaurant for the first time 2 days ago. I was by myself, and was greeted immediately by Demi. She's such a sweet individual with great work ethic. I then sat down at the bar. Without hesitation I got my menu and a water super quick. I ordered edamame. When that came out it was warm and tasty. I've been to several Japanese restaurants and they normally come out a tad bit cold but they're still delicious. So it made me like and prefer edamame warm now. My next order was cali & eel roll. They came out shortly after on one plate yummier than expected. I ordered tempura shrimp udon soup and Demi was so attentive she notified me saying that there was a delay due to miscommunication in the kitchen. I then requested to have it to go since I was starting to get full and needing to leave. They bagged it in a paper stapled shut, I didn't care to open and peek at it. I placed my left over edamame and sushi in an addition to go container then combined it in a plastic bag with my to go bag. Later that evening for dinner I had opened my paper bag to see that it was regular shrimp udon stir fry with a separate container full of just tempura. I called back and the manager that answered comped me a free meal on my next visit. I happened to be able to come for lunch the next day. They still got it wrong and did regular shrimp udon soup instead of tempura shrimp udon soup but I just let it go at that point. Emily was my waitress on the 2nd visit and there was a bit of a conflict when requesting to have my free meal with the owner due to misunderstanding and comprehension but she handled it mature and passively I respect her so much for it. This new little sushi place is great, and I can't wait to go back. There are so many sushi options to choose from, and many unique or interesting flavor combos that separates them from being any other sushi stop. As picky sushi eater, there were many options that had my mouth watering, opposed to other places that only have a couple that sound good to me. The appetizers we had were the crab rangoon, tataki tuna, and the yellowtail jalapeño (my favorite, and a fun way to eat sushi), they were all delicious, and they were all plated beautifully. The chefs clearly take great pride in their plating, and the food actually looks as pictured. If you order multiple sushi rolls, they custom plate them together. I got the cosmo roll, which I highly recommend if you like tuna rolls. The staff here were also very friendly and attentive, definitely above average. I would like to try their hibachi dinner items next time, though I would like to see a few more hot dishes in general. The menu descriptions could use some work as well, as they were sometimes slightly inaccurate or inconsistent. I thought there was eel in the cosmo roll, which I asked about since I did not want eel, but it is actually just a sweet eel sauce. Overall, Umi is a new favorite and not even very expensive for the quality and appearance of the food. From the pictures, I thought it was going to be a fancy, expensive dinner, but the prices were a pleasant surprise. One thing to say about this place... YES. If you love sushi and classic hibachi dishes with a little modernity. This place.. Yes, please, moar, nao, win, legend, saucy and other words get caught lacking when it comes to describing how good the food is. And the prices are definitely NOT bad! 11/10 will meme again.

Now for the service staff. The gentleman that greeted is was very kind and sensible. He listened and responded to what we needed. 10/10

Our server Selena was a master level of attentive, friendly and knowledgeable without being over the top and was very genuine. She takes the rights parts of soft skills and throws out the trash that most companies try to beat into their employees, making her today's big winrar! 💯/💯

Will be back many more times and enjoy more great food. Reminder that no I'm not paid to write any review I leave. I'm just a fat man. 🤣

This review still stands 9 months later. Selena still rocks and the food is still phenomenal!

09/17/2022 update: Cierra has been our server now for the last 2, or 3 times we've gone as Selena is no longer there and, I can't say I'm disappointed with Cierra in any way. Either they just keep finding gems, or the business has strong leadership. I'd be apt to believe both. Still 11/10 and any appropriate Internet memes...
