Doro’s Italian Restaurant — Restaurant in Calhoun

***Update and a definite rating drop in the service department I was in yesterday, and what a horrendous change in service from just one month prior. My friend and I went to have a late lunch. It was quiet afternoon, so I would have thought that we should have been able to receive service relatively quickly, unfortunately this was not the case.

We watched as our server walked by our table several times not even acknowledging us. We finally had to flag him down and his response was, Is everything okay? He could see that clearly we had not placed our order yet, however he was just going to pass it off and keep going.

We informed him that we were ready to place our order and he says oh and started to walk away. We informed him again that we were ready to place our order and it was almost like it was an inconvenience, however, he took our order.

Our food was delivered by another server who was friendly and asked if there was anything else we needed before he left our table. Our response was no, so he left. Not once did our original server ever come back to check on our drinks, our food, or check to see if we wanted anything else.

When we were ready for another refill, we had to flag a different server down. Does it in end there? Unfortunately not, the saga continues. Once we got our refills and finished our dinner, we sat and talked for a moment. We would have expected that our tickets would have been delivered, but that didn't happen. We again had to flag someone down to get our ticket delivered to our table so that we could prepare for payment.

Once our server placed the ticket on the table and left, not to be seen again for quite some time. Finally we got him flagged down and made our payment.

To say the least, I was very disappointed with this visit. The food was satisfactory, but the server needed to pay attention to his "older guests" and not the young ladies that were in the restaurant.

The atmosphere is great. We came at dinner rush so there was a little delay for service but not at all bad, and we were seated right away.

Food: every dish we tried was just a smidge too sweet. (Bruschetta, Eggplant Parm, Chicken Francese). I would have liked to see more spice/heat and a bit more salt, but that’s easily fixed at the table. Tiramisu was great but needed a little stronger coffee flavor. Texture nailed it. The sweetened mascarpone in the tiramisu and the mini cannolis was just perfect though!

Overall: excellent place to eat Italian.

After my son's concert at the local musician's club, we stopped by due to a joint promotion between the two businesses (and because we loved our previous experience.)

Despite being a busy night, our little group of 3 got a great seat quickly, and the busier social atmosphere of a Friday night really added to the fun.

Food: I remarked to my wife that it seemed like Doro's had addressed EVERY little thing I mentioned in my review. Mind you, I don't have any delusions of grandeur, I KNOW it wasn't because of me :-) The sauces for the apps and the entrees seemed a lot more savory and spicy than the previous visit. And the tiramisu (my personal favorite) had just a marvelous increase in the coffee flavor. To beat it all, after mentioning the promotional discount from the Musician's Club event, I learned that I had totally misunderstood. The discount was for take-out orders only, but the manager went ahead and okayed the discount.

Doro's offers a great atmosphere, with comfortable ambient lighting and relaxing music playing in the background in this somewhat eclectic environment. They are situated in downtown Calhoun, inside, what used to be Thurman's Café.

Their food selection and quality are well above what others are offering in the area, and service levels are appropriate. They offer a small selection of wine, liquor, and beer. However, they don't seem to have a bar area to sit at (unless upstairs, maybe).

You can order by phone, in-person or online, however note, when making special requests online, they may impose an upcharge upon pickup. Typical wait times are 15-30 minutes, and parking is ample.

A few small things to note. They close the kitchen 30 minutes earlier than their posted closing time and will not accept orders after that time. When ordering online, like anywhere, check your order for accuracy before leaving.

It's nice to see that people are finally beginning to invest in opening new businesses that offer an enjoyable nightlife in downtown Calhoun! We want more like this!
