Central Sandwich — Restaurant in California

*Edited on 10/1/24 to add: I’ve been back several times and they seem to have worked out the kinks! Staff is still friendly as ever, sandwiches are still the best in the area, but now things are running more efficiently and consistently. Thank you Central Sandwich for a delicious lunch every time!

Best lunch place in McKinleyville, best sandwiches in Humboldt County for sure, but the staff has been struggling lately and things are inconsistent. After some recent staff changes, I’m now charged a different price for the same custom sandwich every single time I order it and twice I’ve ordered ahead only to receive the incorrect sandwich. Staff is apologetic, but it’s annoying to have this happen frequently and it seems maybe it should be made right with a sandwich on the house or a coupon for a bag of chips or something. The last time they messed up, they didn’t answer their phone, so I had to drive all the way back to get things fixed after I had already driven there once and waited in the long line just for them to give me the wrong sandwich. I love this place and appreciate the kind staff, but whoever is training them on logistics needs to step it up. Not sure what the point of ordering ahead is, if you then wait in a long line for your food anyway. Online ordering system only lets you select one “extra” so you can’t pick avocado and cheese on the same sandwich and it wants to charge you $1.75 to cut the salami portion in half, which makes no sense. I literally just left there and I can't even believe the experience I just had. They are RIDICULOUSLY over priced first of all but I still continued to go there because their food is good. My fiancé and I were ordering and the lady at the counter ask my fiancé if he wanted a half or a whole. My fiancé is a quiet and reserved person but I can clearly hear him say that he wanted a whole but she continued to stand there for another minute and then threw her hands up as in if she is done with his behavior for whatever reason and said at him do you want a half or a whole. He said I would like a whole please. I then asked her to put a little lettuce on my sandwich very politely and she proceeded to pile about of mountain of lettuce and I asked her to take it off because I asked for a little lettuce and she then acted like I was requesting a huge in great thing. If she would have listened to me in the first place she would've known that I only wanted a little bit a lettuce. Then when we were paying at the counter I told my fiancé please do not to because that woman was incredibly rude with her behavior the gentleman at the counter overheard us and basically threw the receipt at my fiancé. Honestly, I don't understand how this place gets such good reviews. I've eaten here twice (I had to give them a second chance) but I just can't bear to pay $10 for a sandwich I make FAR better at home for about $2.50!

The fact that they handle cash between making sandwiches without washing their hands or using gloves is the final straw. I won't be eating here ever again. If I had noticed that little detail on my first visit, it would have been my last...

The bread was the same Franz bread that I use at home (read: CHEAP), the roast beef was edible but sub-par, and the lettuce was shaved so hair-thin that it was actually mushy in texture.

Has to be among the most overpriced and disappointing meals I've ever had.

Really, if you're thinking of getting a sandwich here, I'd suggest trying Murphy's up in Trinidad, you'll pay about 1/3 less for a sandwich that's 3...
