Heard good things about the place but came away very disappointed. It's nothing special. This is one of those places where the "great" ratings are submitted by people who cannot cook or don't want to make an effort.
First, it's not a deli - it's a sandwich shop. Second, the sandwich was no better than what you can get from at a grocery store - but at a higher price. Reminded me of a "deli" in a business center that is the only option for those working nearby.

There was also a strong political vibe coming from one staff member who was wearing political apparel and loudly making comments about candidates and parties. When you walk in, Max's has a nice down to earth home feel, and a very personal interaction makes you feel welcomed. But the food? The Sandwhiches are beyond amazing, fresh avocado and greens on Cibatta or whatever you please. But let's take a moment of silence for my sweet tooth because their dessert bars are undeniably sinful. But you know what's the best out of all of it? Everything is a beyond reasonable price and you get to say "Hi" to Max yourself. If you are in Auburn passing through or whatever it may be, stop in to Max's trust me...
