If you find yourself drawn to Semifreddi's baguettes at Whole Foods or Berkeley Bowl... be sure to make your way here! There is a lovely selection of pastries (e.g. scones, muffins, turnovers, Danish), cookies, your favorite loaves (all varieties of their baguettes, ciabatta, etc.), sandwich rolls, and Semifreddi's Bakery exclusive sandwich bread (about 4 varieties e.g. multigrain, whole wheat). The sandwich bread, especially the multigrain, is delicious. A little sour with plenty of flavor and texture. It makes the best buttered toast ever... so flavorful and crisp! Very addicting... which is good because you need to eat or refrigerate your sandwich bread otherwise it will go bad sitting on the counter. Oh, the price of freshness!
The employees at the bakery were incredibly kind and funny, very knowledgeable about all the products. If you want any of your purchased loaves sliced, be sure to ask and they have a machine that seems big enough to chop partition those long baguettes into nice, even slices.
The sandwich selection at the bakery is not extensive, but they are simple yet high quality and delicious. BLT on sandwich bread was fantastic. Bread toasted to perfection and every element fresh and crisp. Truly a joy to eat. There are a couple very small tables in front of the store where you can nibble, or if you walk around the back of the building there are a couple nice benches on the grass. Very peaceful.
They have packaged croutons and biscotti (both plain and chocolate-dipped). Personally, I enjoyed the chocolate-dipped biscotti, it's almondy and dry, but not in a bad way... perfect for pairing with a drink!
If you're driving here, the block is a very odd triangular shape and you'll have to find street parking nearby. However it's a very pleasant neighborhood so a short walk is a small...
Read moreLove the bread from Semifreddi. Didn't know they had a bakery located in Kensington, an area that is closed to Berkeley. At this location, they also make sandwiches, breakfast as well as scones, muffins, turnovers and a lot more variety of breads. They are also cheaper here than buying from Safeway or Whole Food or other grocery stores that carries the bread. The counter person was very friendly and was familiar with the local clientele. My daughter loves muffaletta. When I told him that she was sick with a sore throat, he was considerate enough to suggest that they won't put it in the bread presser so long to make it too crispy for her. Now, that's what I call excellent customer service! I would definitely come back again to buy the bread and partake in their kind and...
Read moreI love Semifreddi's. I only recently discovered it. It is a teenie tiny hole in the wall shop. There is room for ~3 people to stand in the shop and there are only 2 small tables outside for people to drink/eat at. However, the pastries and coffee selection are delicious and we'll priced (Especially for the neighborhood). Bread is delivered daily from their main site. It is particularly popular with people who stop by before the farmers market on weekends becsuse it us open before all the stalls (and cheaper pastries). Parking is rough on weekends, but if you drive up the hill you can't usually...
