4/24/2024 - So I finally got to try this little restaurant for the 1st time: Teriyaki Chicken Express. Address 9110 Kiefer Blvd, Sacramento, CA 95826. The food pictures look so good. We just went through the drive thru. Now... this is just my opinion and my experience. It may be different for others.
Cons We got the plate that had double chicken, veggies, and rice. Our chicken was on the very dry side. The rice was kinda hard soft, or so my little one told me. My little one didn't like the rice so didn't eat it. Normally loves eating rice tho. The two sauces we got were watered down and not much flavor, sadly. One was teriyaki and the other was the sweet sauce for the eggroll. We did not like the sauces. So luckily I had my own sauce at home and use that instead.
Pros I loved veggies, so the veggies were great! I just had to add a little salt and pepper... and WhaLaa!! Yummy veggies. There is no flavor in the veggies. FYI. My little one liked the sweet and sour pork. Ate that all up. But my little one said the other sweet/sour pork from another restaurant we've been to had much more flavor and much tastier.
Conclusion We didn't go inside. So I can't comment on the inside. The drive thru was quick and easy. Large menu outside. The guy that took our orders at the window was nice. Sad chicken was dry, eggroll wasn't very good (had perfect crisp tho), rice on the harder side but still edible, and sauces were watered down so there wasn't much flavor. Good that my little one ate the pork. Veggies were great after I add a little salt and pepper to my liking (I prefer to do that on my own so not to salty).
This is just my experience. This is not to put them down. But we weren't too thrill about their foods. Not very tasty. Maybe your experience may be different from mine. But should I ever decide to go here again to give it a 2nd chance, I'll update my review. You should go try them yourself and see how you like them and have your...
Read moreThe inside of the place has a really bad smell. Not sure what it is but it's enough to make a person order to go. There was no one dining in at all when I was there at about 5pm on a Friday.
The food wasn't great but it also wasn't the worst I've had. Since we've never been before we ordered a few different things for all of us to share.
Double Pork Teriyaki - Every other place I've had this at serves it shaved thin and grilled with sauce. Here it was sliced roast pork tenderloin that was about 1/4" thick and it was really dry. They serve all sauces on the side and they don't give you enough. Just 1 little cup per plate. I'm guessing they give the same amount of sauce whether you get the single or double portion. Because of this, the entire dish ate dry. The rice that was underneath the meat and veg was also dry. You can tell that they portion out the rice for the plates well ahead of time and just pop the meat and veg on top, close it up and serve it. The top of the rice was drier than the rest. The sauce was just okay. I's very thin and the dry pork just sucked it all in.
We also ordered the Double Beef Teriyaki and the Double Chicken Teriyaki plates. We had the same issues with them as we did with the pork.
Shrimp Tempura - This was something bought frozen and just tossed into a fryer. I can buy a better version of this (frozen) at Costco.
Egg rolls - These were the best things in the whole order but these were also frozen and just tossed into a fryer.
The pics are of possible mold growing on the dining room walls near the ceiling and of the...
Read moreI've been wanting to try Teriyaki Chicken Express for some time now, and had a chance to stop in yesterday, April 7th, for lunch. I ordered the spicy chicken plate (#29, I believe, @ $9.49 including tax) and it was some of the best Asian fast food I've had in a while. The plate was big; big enough to share for two light appetites. I was really hungry and had a hard time putting it down. The chicken was generously portioned and far above average for these hole-in-the-wall Asian food joints. The vegetables too (carrots, cabbage, brocolli and onion) were firm and fresh and tasty. I almost gave four stars for the 25 cent soda refills and the dirty interior, but I'm all about value, and it's obvious they're putting their money into the food, which is fine by me. The 25 cent soda refills were an issue only because I'm not going to get back in the lunch line on my way out the door. In any case, a minor annoyance, and I will certainly be heading back there for lunch...
