Balkan Grill — Restaurant in Calumet Township

No frills monster burgers that are tasty and unique, especially if all you've ever had is typical American fare. I've never had a burger that I couldn't finish until now. I had to cut this one in half as it is larger and quite a bit thicker than your standard U.S. burger. I ordered a stuffed burger (with nothing added) by phone which was a little unsettling because I had a couple of special requests and there is a tiny bit of a language barrier and some cultural etiquette differences. The man wasn't rude, he just got the info he needed and was done with the conversation. Excellent! I had a first taste at work last week when there were Special Plate samples brought in for someone's retirement. I had the boneless chicken thigh in one of those wonderful, pillowy pita breads, dressed with onion and cabbage salad. And I have always wanted to try cevap. I would see them advertised at the Greek Import in Merrillville, but never tried them. I was expecting just another sausage. So much better. I wanted my family to try this so I placed an order to take to my in-laws for all of us to enjoy, and everyone did. We all loved it. I don't know how I haven't heard of Balkan Grill until now. If you ever get tired of the Petro and TA restaurants menu, this place, located right by the entrance to Petro truck stop is a very nice surprise. As the name suggests, the Balkan inspired menu offers Serbian and Bulgarian grilled specialties but it’s Eastern European comfort food above all, not only for Eastern European taste buds, it will satisfy every appetite. The portions are big, decent priced and will scare away vegetarians, if nothing else. The inside is not very inspiring but that’s expected, most people take their food to go anyway.
