Kantipur Cafe — Restaurant in Cambridge

I live around the corner. Been coming here since they opened. I can only guess that they are the victim of their own success - but their service has been slipping to a point where it is now absolutely awful.

I had a house full of guests visiting from out of town. Despite having had issues with delayed orders in the past, I decided to give them another try. After completing our order we were informed it would take 20 minutes. We dispatched a couple of people to collect the order at the communicated time... and they waited there for another 40 minutes. For this they gave us nothing - no discount, no free desert, nothing but a very perfunctory apology. It seems there was a large order before ours. I'm sorry, but I worked in food service for over a decade. I would have been fired if I ever did that to a customer. If you have a large order that you know is going to slow the next order - maybe don't tell them it's going to take only 20 minutes. If you fail to do that, and take 40 minutes out of someone's evening, maybe try and make it right? Won't be coming here again and would urge you stay away. First time here and the food was quite good! I ordered vegetable pakora, chicken momo(steam), Lamb Vindaloo, and chicken biryani. The vegetable pakora was so good and came out hot and fresh. Very flavorful 😊 solid 10/10 The momo was good as well but it was my first time trying and thought it would be more honestly. Not bad at all though sauces really helped. 6/10 personally. Lamb was very well seasoned as expected but the meat was a little bit tough. We ordered hot and it did not provide the expected kick. Still very good and came out hot and a perfect portion. 7/10 Now the chicken biryani was such a hit and the portion was insane. Solid 10/10 as i spent most of my morning looking for somewhere off of other reviews. Based on other reviews after visiting it did not disappoint. Was so amazing and the chicken was tender and packed with flavor. again 10/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This is definitely a place I will be returning to in the future.

regarding the service the tables were a bit sticky… but i’m sure it was because of the scorching heat. It did take a little bit long BUT the food came out so hot and fresh it was...

This place is a great neighborhood spot, and what I love most about it is the professionalism of the family staff, and when I order dishes from here, it's not a barrage of salt + curry + garlic. Some dishes have a hint of sweetness, other have a just something a bit of something else. In short, the flavors are more nuanced than your standard Indian cuisine restaurant. I think it might be the "Nepali" part of Kantipur's food culture shining through, but I'm not sure!

This restaurant is family owned and building the storefront into an eatery was a dream for them over several years: the family owns the bodega next door and proudly tell regulars about it. They made the opening happen despite COVID, so I'm rooting for them! Price is great too.
