I really wanted to like this place! Great drinks (fantastic beer!) Good food. Slow service.
I love the concept here. Locally sourced, sustainably farmed, food and drinks with a focus on the Chesapeake Bay.
Update:
They have really hit their stride now. Both food and service were significantly better than our first visit. The raw oysters were fantastic, as was the Asian pear salad, however the real triumph was the donut holes for dessert.
Portions were still on the small side, butt in a good way, we didn't over eat and felt full after our meal. Beer was still great as before.
Original review:
Between a flight and 2 full sized beers we tried 6 of the local Millworks beers on their menu and liked them all. The apple spiced hefeweizen was especially good.
Food was good, not great with the exception of the muscles which easily were the best I've ever had. Clam strips were nicely breaded, crispy, and flavorful, but slightly rubbery. Best clam strips in the area, but nothing compared to fresh from the shore. Their take on fish n chips was interesting. The fish was expertly cooked and the batter was light and delicious, however there portion was small and the batter so thin it was more of a breading. The "shoestring fries" were where things went wrong. There was a mountain of the things (easily 3x the portion of fish), and they were less "fries" than they were "fried toothpicks". Overall it wasn't really fish and chips. Have you ever watched cutthroat kitchen? Was the chef given tapioca instead of batter? Did his potatoes get replaced by a bag of frozen hash browns? It did "remind me of fish and chips". The vegan mushroom ravioli was a disappointment. Very small portion, with more tomatoes than raviolis. The balsamic vinegar glaze was too rich, or they put on too much, or both. The vegan ricotta cheese was just bad. (To be fair we've never had vegan ricotta before so maybe it was good and we just don't like vegan ricotta?) The mushroom raviolis themselves were excellent. The mushrooms had a wonderful light umami flavor and the pasta was cooked perfectly. It's too bad that they were served with sour, upon sour, upon sour. The mushroom flavor was completely lost.
Service was slow. But in a good way? We didn't feel at all rushed, and had a very enjoyable leisurely meal. At one point we did feel we were waiting too long on drinks (finished both our drinks and the whole bottle of water provided before being asked if we needed new drinks) but other than that the staff was friendly...
Read moreThis is my most recent, honest review. My husband and I have been coming here from when it first opened. I will say that as of today, there’s been a lot of new changes. There’s a new manager and new staff in the kitchen and the front. It’s really sad to see so many changes to something that was so good. They used to have such a great staff (they’re all gone). My favorite was Alex, who was a warm and friendly waitress. None of the waitresses there now are warm and friendly. They seem to have a high turnover of staff because each time I visit, there’s always new faces . The menu hasn’t changed much, except they got rid of some staples like the oysters and the doughnuts! So be alarmed. My husband and I loved those doughnuts! According to their new manager, they have to get rid of the fryer to make room for a pizza oven. Today, we went for happy hour and shockingly, the bill was double the price of what you’d pay elsewhere for HH. I ended up paying $100+ for a small plate, an entree, salad, and 2 rounds of drinks plus the doughnuts. The portions were very small for the price, which is a shame. The doughnuts were under cooked so we sent them back and they took much longer than the first time. You don’t know what’s going on in the kitchen but I can imagine that it’s only chaos. Finally, they brought it out and the inside was still a bit doughy. It was also missing the cinnamon sugar coating. The quality is not up to par with how it used to be. Overall, It’s very disappointing considering this place used to be a gem. Now it’s just ordinary. I don’t think our food was worth the price, but I guess they cater more to the wealthy who spend $$$ on a bill. Needless to say, expect to drop hundreds of dollars to dine in. It’s...
Read moreI'm not from the area originally but have heard about this place from a few different people and finally got the opportunity to try it for myself. The best thing I got to have tonight was the fountain coke and water. A group of five adults and a child took from 6:15-8:10 to order eat and leave. The waitress seemed decent at first and even recommended one dish over another to one of the memebers of the group. After the initial order there wasnt much of a presence from said waitress, of the items that we read off of the menu provided multiple that we had selected place the order for and waited to arrive were later told to us as being unavailable. The food was cold, bland and obviously cooked and sat to wait for over an hour and a half to get plates to table. After the manager came to apologize about the wait and offered to comp desserts for the table we ordered said desserts where we then waited again. The food runner was placing plates in front of people who hadnt ordered that item and when asked how long it would take to get a scoop of vanilla ice cream responded with "shouldnt take long at all" well that scoop of icecream never came to the table. Where the comped desserts were appreciated the check came and infact only two of the five were. From the well overcooked chicken to the salty fries and the continued list I could put I learned that not only was it the first time I had the opportunity to eat here it would also be my last. Im not sure if it was the f,h, or z crew working tonight but this is not only a customer lost for future dining but an entire family that will choose to...
