POOR SERVICE ALERT! We visited Papertown Coffee today (5/16/25) at around 1pm and had a truly terrible experience thanks to the young, blonde female barista. One thing we love about traveling in the southeastern US is how friendly and welcoming everyone is, but this particular employee was the exact opposite. She didn't greet us when we entered, so we gave an enthusiastic "Hi! How are you today?" to which she didn't respond. We gave her the benefit of the doubt, thinking that maybe she didn't hear us. When it was time for us to order (keep in mind that it was not busy; maybe 3 customers in the entire coffee shop) she just looked up with no greeting, no smile, and no words. At this point we should have just walked out, but we ordered our coffee and tried to be smiley and pleasant. She finished the transaction with as few words as possible. When we got our coffee we tried once again to be pleasant, offering a "thank you very much!" but, once again, there was no response. She never smiled or made any effort whatsoever to welcome us or make us feel like we were paying customers. We never have experiences like this when we travel in North Carolina. We also never leave poor reviews, but we thought "Hmm, if I owned a small business, would I want to know this?" And, of course, we would. Perhaps this young lady was having a bad day, but she needs to learn what customer service is and how the employees are the face of a business. We cannot recommend this coffee shop. Go next door to Grateful Table Cafe and Provisions where they also serve coffee and a selection of chef-made sandwiches, all with friendly and...
Read moreWith all the fantastic reviews, we've been wanting to try Papertown Coffee for a while now, especially the "desserts." We arrived at 2:15 PM on a Friday (they close at 3) and were surprised to find them bringing in the outside tables already. So much for drinking/eating there - already felt as though we were imposing. Walked inside, and the feeling continued. Three people working - nobody welcomed us or even said a word. Just felt like we weren't supposed to be there (perhaps we weren't). Went over to look in the display case - only dessert they had was one type of cookie. Pass. Guessing the selection was much better earlier - lesson learned. But we ordered 3 drinks, "to go" of course at this point. Coffees came out fresh, hot, and quickly. But again, the entire staff seemed to be in horrible moods. Barely said anything when we thanked them and wished them a good rest of their day/weekend. Bottom line is the coffee was decent, desserts "gone", and unfriendly staff. Perhaps we should try again much earlier in the day. But not sure it's worth it at this point. There are better options a few minutes away in Waynesville (Smokey Mountain Roasters, Coffee Cup Cafe) and Candler...
Read moreWow! This place was definitely worth the diversion from I-40 en route from Gatlinburg, TN to Asheville, NC! We were in search of a coffee shop, and we found that plus excellent breakfast wraps! The bacon, egg, and cheese wrap is loaded with freshly cooked eggs, crispy bacon, and plenty of cheese with a tortilla that has been expertly grilled/toasted--perfection! The coffee was good, too. I got a small salted caramel latte that had just a perfect amount of flavor/sweet with the delicious coffee shining through. My husband chose a choc ganache hazelnut iced latte he said was flavored perfectly. If you're in the area, you definitely have to try out Papertown Coffee. Right now they are still doing curbside orders because of the covid pandemic, and the staff were super friendly to come out and take our order and bring it out. The sign out front also gives you their phone number and suggests their app, too....
