A New England Clam Shack in Ft. Myers We are fairly new full-timers in this area and have heard nothing but good things about this place so we gave it try yesterday. We expected to have a bit of wait when we arrived for dinner around 6:30, but when we got to their parking lot, just a few folks sitting outside and plenty of open parking. We went inside to put our name on the wait list and had a chance to look around. A surprisingly small place, just like many clam shacks we have visited in the New England area. A nautical theme decor with tall tables and chairs around the perimeter of the room and low tables and seating in the center. A raw bar sits on one side, but no seating there. Our hostess took our name, gave us a pager and we went outside to wait. There’s a small seating area at the front of the building that is shielded from Del Prado by some palms. There are tables with umbrellas and chairs for those that might want to dine outside, and a bar. Several beers on tap, bottled beers and wine. I don’t think they have cocktails. I had a 16 oz. Yuengling tap ($5.00) and we took a seat. Our pager went off just a few minutes later and we chose to sit inside as it was a very warm evening. Lindsey was our server and took our drink order right after we sat down - Iced Tea ($2.99). She was very polite and attentive and answered our questions and made sure we never ran out of drink. For starters we got the Whole Belly Clam appetizer ($16.99). They are legit! They are breaded lightly and fried fast. A great clam flavor, especially when biting into the belly where the flavor is fairly intense. Clam lovers like this. I had the Blackened Mahi Tacos ($14.99). Three flour tortillas, each with a base of a creamy cole slaw and a nice piece of Mahi with blackening seasoning and blackened just a bit, then topped with a mango salsa and cilantro. They were excellent. The seasoning was not spicy or salty and the fish was nice and moist. The center of the plate had a bowl of coconut jasmine rice. I am not a real rice person, but this was something else. I could, and did, eat a huge bowl of it! The rice had a light coconut flavor, just a little sweet and somewhat of a floral aroma. My wife had the Twin Tails entree ($27.99). This meal comes with two 4 ounce cold water lobster tails, mashed potatoes, lemon buttered broccoli and a cup of melted butter for dipping. The tails spent a little time under the broiler and were presented picture perfect setting on top of their shells. I could see my wife just melt with every bite of butter dipped lobstah. The mashed potatoes were ok and the broccoli was great – not the usual steamed and plated style. We saw so many great looking dishes delivered to other tables so I think this will become one of our go to places. There are great daily specials also so...
Read moreAfter reading the other reviews, we decided to give this place a shot. I really didn't want to go to NFM for dinner -again. This place did not disappoint! Very small and quaint. Super hot outside, so no one was eating outside. Realized this was going to be a hit when there were about 3 tables of locals enjoying the grouper. We had the Florida Keys Platter (delicious! The shrimp are not seasoned but were cooked to perfection. Old Bay is on the table. The rice was delicious- I havent had jasmine rice that was so sweet. I really enjoyed that paired with the blackened seasoning on the fish. The lobster I could really taste the fire grill- great flavor), lobster bisque (honestly, the men in my group thought they ordered clam chowder [don't mind them] so they acted disappointed, it was just okay), butter baked haddock with shrimp (this was amazing. The buttery flavor with the panko was exceptional. My husband thought it could be cooked a little more, HOWEVER, he is not a big seafood eater. I for one HATE overcooked fish, but the panko was so nice, a little extra crunch would've been appreciated), grouper and shrimp basket (fried. This was really good. The fries were battered and quote "are the best fries I have ever tasted!") and Blackened Gulf Grouper (the blackened seasoning is excellent. It's not too spicy. The brussels did not have enough bacon grease to brussels, but were still good. The mashed potatoes were just mashed potatoes.) The only thing we would have any complaint about- and didn't even bother to complain because everything else was so delicious, the staff was so friendly, the atmosphere was great AND I want to go back before we leave were the sodas. I think the syrup to carbonation ratio was off. Not biggie. Probably should've gotten alcohol anyway ;-) We got a GIANT piece of chocolate cake to share between 4 adults. It's enormous. Holy cow. So sweet. So rich. You like fish? Go to this restaurant. You wont be...
Read moreI've been looking to try this place for a while and I finally went today. It's a rustic seafood place with some really cute decor (nets with shells and lobsters hanging from the ceiling - that sort of stuff). I went with my 5 year old daughter she loved that she got to sit under a lobster. We (okay the 5 year old) opted to sit at one of the high top tables. The table and chairs were sturdy (no wobbling) but I would suggest to anyone with a large rear end (like myself) to choose a regular table or booth; I think those would be more comfortable. I want to point out that this restaurant doesn't really cater to families with young children. They do not have a children's menu or really any child friendly beverages. We we're the youngest patrons in the restaurant by probably 30 years. That being said we were both able to find food we wanted to order. I ordered the clam chowder cup and let me tell you, that was plenty. I'm not sure how people can finish a bowl of the stuff. It was chalked full of seafood goodness. There was even a clam shell - it was clearly there on purpose but I'd never seen that before and thought it was a great idea. My daughter got the fish and chips (full size portion as there are no children's meals) the fish (cod) was amazing - of course I had to try some - and the fries were crunchy. I also ordered the conch fritters because I get so excited every time I see them on a menu. However they were a bit of a let down - they were overcooked and the batter was kind of a gummy texture. I didn't mention this to the server and I acknowledge that I didn't not give them the opportunity to rectify this dish. The server (Ryan I think) was very friendly and attentive. The regular menu is 99% seafood (unsurprising) but they do have a daily specials menu that included ribs and a NY strip...
