I used to like this store...a long time ago. The animals looked well taken care of. However, in recent months, it's changed. I noticed a few weeks back, there were A LOT of white hamsters in one enclosure. They didn't look so good, but I gave the store the benefit of the doubt thinking maybe this was just a temporary situation. I was back again this past Saturday, July 7, 2018. It was around 3:30 pm. Same large group of white hamsters in one enclosure, plus a brown Robo hamster in the mix. It was running around to various hamsters, biting them while they slept. This led to the bitten hamsters waking up, jumping and shrieking. Anyone that knows how to care for hamsters knows that you should never mix different breeds of hamsters in the same habitat because they will fight. Also, a well known fact about hamsters is that they are SOLITARY animls. They should be housed alone, or they WILL fight. I counted atleast 20 in one enclosure. These poor hamsters had small patches of hair missing due to scarring. Two hamsters had fresh scabs on them. One had a bad vertical cut on it's lip, next to it's nose. Another had a scab near the center of it's back. There are so many hamsters that a couple of them were sleeping on top of 2 different areas of urine soaked wood shavings. They kept getting poop stuck on them, then it would fall off. I took pictures of this to send to the corporate office and animal services. I asked the female store clerk why the hamsters are all scarred up and she very nonchalantly said, oh, they fight. I told her that they had way too many hamsters in there, so of course they'd fight. When I asked why there were so many in one place, her reply was "well they breed". Seriously?? How irresponsible can they be? I suggested separating the hamsters and her and another female clerk said it's not that easy. I say, actually it is that easy!! I have done it with my gerbils. I had 14 of them at one point because another irresponsible pet store...Pet Kingdom...sold me 2 "male" gerbils. Turns out I had one male and one female and had no idea the female was pregnant. This is pure laziness on the part of Petsupermarket, and the poor innocent animals are paying for it, stuck in a torture box. I won't be shopping there anymore. PetSmart and Petco do keep only one hamster per habitat, so I feel better about supporting them instead. I won't be spending my money at Petsupermarket on Del Prado anymore, but I will be stopping back in there to check on the animals again. These photos are from Saturday, July 7. I will post more when I go back soon. Hopefully animal services can make a difference. I'll know...
Read moreHad multiple issues at this location today (7/1/23 around 6pm) with one person. Believe her name was Angela? First she told my family that the kittens were new and shy and my family needed to give them space even though she said she noticed we were being kind to them. The kittens were far from shy as when we walked around, they followed us and wanted to be pet. But apparently she wanted us to leave them alone. Second time, she asked us if we needed help with fish. We said not yet and she told us we would need to go find her when we were ready cause she wasnt going to keep asking us and get told no. Lastly, when we were ready for fish, she tried to get them, but had trouble. They are butterfly loaches that stick to the glass. Well they went and hid and she told us she couldn't do much to help us anymore because the fish disappeared and left the tank. Then she handed the net to my nephew for him to try and find the fish. At this point, we went to get a different person to help us. We got Bonnie, who is a great employee, to find our "invisible" fish. She did find the fish and check our items out. Bonnie also apologized for our inconvenience and knows what she is doing and how to help customers. Angela, however, needs management to speak with her about her behavior and interactions with customers. If it wasn't for Bonnie and another worker named Noah, we would not be returning to...
Read moreI understand "laid back" but this place is a little too far on the wrong side of that. Honestly, the employees were informed and helpful, but they need to do something about the collections of teenagers in there loitering. CLEARLY not there to purchase anything, using foul language and laughing about being inebriated at 4:00 on a Tuesday. My wife says it was this same way when she came a few days ago. I won't be back.
Update:. I did go back. I needed substrate that didn't come in a 30 lb bag on a Sunday and they were the only place open. This time, my experience was pleasant. I'm sure I had a foul face on, expecting the worst, and still I got friendly and fast service without the loitering issues from before. Autumn was prompt and friendly, Michael the cashier was likely the most upbeat person I'll meet today, and Michelle got me thru the line very quickly. I actually want to come back. Kudos Pet Supermarket on Del Prado, maybe I rushed to judgment in my prior review. Changed...
