Before I review a place, I've decided to eat there 3-5 times, on different days over a long span of time, so I'm not just posting a review based on a good or bad day. Anyone has those. I went at least 4 random times spread out over last Summer or Fall/This Winter. Separated this into "good", "irritating", and "not good".
The good/great:
There must be good/experienced cooks there with some culinary skill. Well-crafted meals you cannot get anywhere else nearby or that would cost 2x the price at a more formal place, and excellent wings (might be the best traditional wings in town).
The mildly-irritating:
Tables are covered in a sort of rubber grip material that, if its your first time there is easily mistaken at first for something sticky/dirty. 3 out of 4 times, the soda was flat and low on ice.
The not good:
While I like everything I've had there, my order has been incorrect 100% of the time, and I asked only for one slight modification all 4 times. (You know... add cheese ----- switch a side, or whatever. Simple stuff) I do this once per visit, with one simple switch or change. Nothing complex. Food was still good but wrong each time. I still ate it. Wouldn't have had time for them to remake it.
I've waited 3 of the 4 times to be acknowledged in a nearly empty restaurant for 15-20 minutes, but I stuck it out because the food was good, even if not correct. This last time was slightly better on that issue. Only 10 minutes before a greeting.
Table service is sporadic with some customers getting much attention and others, none. At no point did wait staff ask me how everything was or if I needed anything else. Basic restaurant service etiquette. I had to wave for attention, which I don't do normally. That was my experience there all 4 times. Frankly I sincerely hope they succeed due to good food quality.
I don't have time for the hassle of complaining then waiting for a replacement order. Not a huge deal. I'd like to think they'd have solved it if I asked, but I didn't. Not their fault on that count. I just didn't have another 30 min to find out.
I still tip 20%+ and leave without any disputes. I just eat what I can, and go. Overall, 4 stars for food, 0.5 or 1 star at best for service.
2-to-2.5 star average, which is weird for a place with good food. Rounded generously up to a 3. I'll try again in a month or 3, to see what's changed, hopefully post a better review, and to get some of those great wings or to try the lamb. That'll be my last try. At that point, the service will...
Read moreOrdered a seafood boil, which is normally really good. Once I got there they claimed to have canceled my order and said it should reflect on my app. The order was still active, and the money had been taken out of my account. The worker said her manager cancelled it, while seeming annoyed I was even there to pick up my order. When I showed her the order was still active on DoorDash, she called her manager and told me I needed to cancel the order. Some people came in and she went to wait on them. I stood there for about ten minutes trying to connect to a live agent to cancel the order. The server never came back over to check in and the cook poked his head out to see what was going on. He made eye contact, rolled his eyes, went back into the kitchen, and started badmouthing us, as if we were the problem. I simply placed an order, waited for an alert it was done, and went to pick it up. I understand they weren't doing seafood boils. That happens in restaurants. What I don't understand is why I was never contacted about the cancellation, why I was made to be the one to physically contact someone to cancel it, and why the staff acted as if I was a issue. The online menu, DoorDash, and Seamless never indicated they weren't serving seafood today, they took my money, and never attempted to cancel it or contact me; yet when I showed up unaware, it was a burden. I was polite and didn't fight or even get upset. As I stated, I understood the reason for not having the boil. I don’t like to make any staffs shift harder, especially over things out of their control. I was kind, and I did not receive the same treatment. I had been ordering since they open, because the food was good, but I don't believe I will be back. Good food isn’t the only quality that makes a great restaurant, and this one seems to lack someof the...
Read moreOrdered the Foul chicken sandwich, cheese was added, not ordered. Fries came with the meal. Server said she would reorder the sandwich. Returned later with a new sandwich, no fries. I guess I was to eat the cold fries from the previous order. Tried to bite into the new sandwich, couldn't because it was hard and tough. Addressed it with the server who said she couldn't cancel the order but perhaps the owner or manager? would give me a 30% discount. How generous for something I couldn't eat. Although I spent less than $20, it was the principle. I refused to make a scene and found it very poor business practice to not cancel an order that was inedible. Fortunately I don't live in Carbondale and don't expect to visit again. Even if I unfortunately come thru again, I definitely won't eat at This&That ever again. Incidentally, others with me ordered other items and were mostly satisfied. Staff was friendly and the atmosphere was very inviting. Unfortunately, that awful chicken sandwich cast a dark shadow over all the...
