This wasn't my first time at this place. I went back because I'd a great experience before. First of all, the malassadas. Translated to Portuguese, means "not well baked". But the version sold at the place are fried. Boh, who knows. Imagine preparing dough for puffs but frying it instead. Akin to donuts but fluffier, empty pastries. I wish the place wouldn't cover those in sugar and add some cinnamon. But they are still pretty good. Weird enough, I also wish they were a bit smaller, like the Portuguese version. Next, roasted duck. Great job on getting a crisp skin. Next, what's called roasted pork. I was extremely happy getting what I call "roasted pork belly". It was pork belly, it was perfectly roasted. My only issue is that I can't trust the place to provide the same item so I wouldn't order delivery online Less controversial, BBQ pork. Not two sweet, very well balanced. Great buy. So tasty! The place is a tiny bit more expensive than other Asian delis but it's cleaner, accepts a ton of cards and the employees are very friendly. By the way, what the heck is wrong with other Asian places that don't accept anything but cash while having prices that aren't any cheaper than the ones accepting those? Avoiding taxes? I don't, why should anybody else. Not sure but Hong Kong Bakery & Deli gets my vote, I will keep preferring it above every...

Read moreWhenever I take a day trip to the South Bay, Hong Kong Bakery is always my first stop, for lunch or a quick dessert. I've been buying cakes and dining at the bakery for lunch since the 80's and became immediately addicted to their white strawberry cake. Sweet white frosting, light white spongy cake with strawberry and white filling. Absolutely refreshing and delicious for an in between the meal snack. Hong Kong has quite a variety of Asian desserts, my wife's favorite being the fresh spongy steamed white rice cakes. It's worth the drive from Orange County to pick up a box of these particular rice cakes, as this variety is hard to find down there.
In contrast, Hong Kong also has some great Hawaiian plates, as authentic as some of those I've had on the islands. The BBQ chicken and meat over rice, are charred perfectly and flavorful. It's hard to get enough of the delicious macaroni salad.
Hong Kong Bakery is located directly across the street from UCLA Harbor Medical Center and parking can be difficult on busy days. The parking lot has tight small stalls and big vehicles can be challenged in these spots. My advice; Park along the street...
