Texas Tea Room — Restaurant in Carthage

A hidden treasure! I think we went around the "circle" 10 times, and we saw this little quaint Café and had to stop. I'm in a manual wheelchair 👩🏽‍🦽 so my friend had to park and go make sure it was wheelchair accessible. After deciding how we'd get up on the sidewalk (there was a ramp, but we had to walk 1/2 a block), we walked to the restaurant. We could smell the deliciousness the closer we got.

It was lunchtime that was obvious because almost every seat was taken! It was literally bursting at the seams in there. It was hopping with the chatter from the locals and the clink of silverware meeting plates as people scrapped up every bite. We found one small table for 2 right at the door... literally right by the door jam.

We munched on the free chips and salsa while perusing the menu. We are bothing eating very wisely as we are on a weight loss journey. I've lost 100 lbs in 11 months, and most restaurants don't have much that I can eat. I noticed their healthy choices of soups and salads, and I got excited. My friend got a soup and I got a cobb salad. I did have some ingredients changed but our server was so kind and did a wonderful job.

The food was superb. I felt like I was at a 5 ⭐️ restaurant ... that's why I gave them 5 ⭐️'s. My friend slurped up her soup and my fork was making the clink, clink, clinking as it hit my plate, just as the local were. We ate far too fast but the food was absolutely divine, not to mention the good service. People finished and left just in time for someone else to come in. There was someone waiting to be seated the entire time we were there. It's an experience you must have. We were traveling through and actually looking for another restaurant. Ended up here by mistake. Was hopeful that it was a sign and we might have found a hidden gem. Service was very poor. The young waitress was distracted by what appeared to be mom and sibings. Had to call her over so we could order. I asked about the chicken fried steak and if it was made in house. She told me it was a favorite and yes it was hand breaded. I ordered it it came with mashed potatoes and green beans. We also ordered a plain cheese burger , just meat, cheese and bun with sweet potato fries. The burger was a precooked frozen patty heated in a microwave and possible put on the flat top. The fries were the hi lite. The mashed potatoes were instant, canned green beans and the absolute worst chicken fried steak ever the gravy I had on the side. If it was supposed to be white gravy, it was a fail. I believe it was a powdered mix with water. I was very disappointed since it says "Fine Dining" on the door. I was worried about wearing shorts in. I did ask at another establishment about how long it has been around. They told me the owner bought it and was a really nice man. Texas Tea Room, what can say... you say fine dinning on your window, but when you walk in it has more of a casual dinner feel. Ive never been to a actual fine dinning establishment where it was self seating, but having said that it did have a nice homie atmosphere. Me and my group started off with the artichoke dip, and the dip was pretty good, but the pita they gave us with it was sub par. I order the shrimp n grits as I have a rule for myseld to always order it if I see it on the menu. The grits were amazing and the brown suger sauce you see glazed over the plate complemented the grits perfectly, but as for the fried bacon wrapped shrimp, I was not satisfied, frankly they had a burnt taste to them, and was left disappointed with the dish as a whole. Wished they would have chosen a simpler method, like a grill or sauteed. The other dishes I have pictured are the Baja Chicken club and Lobster Ravioli. I myself didnt taste these dished but they were presented very well, and they were satisfied with the taste. I would definitely give this place another try if given a chance.
