I went with two friends around September 2023. We were refused service and accused of faking our IDs. To give context, my friend (female) and I were both 21 at the time and had been to the other Sundance location downtown for margaritas and a meal months earlier. We decided to give the 28th Street location a try since we had enjoyed the other location. We arrived around 6 or 7 and the restaurant was nearly empty, so we were seated immediately. We were not handed a drink menu so we asked for one, while mentioning what we had bought at the other location. My female friend and I went to order our drinks (our other male friend does not drink) and the waitress looked at our IDs then said she had to get her manager. After a 15 minute wait with no update, manager came out and said she needed to scan our IDs. She did so and came back out and squatted by the table as though we were children and said she "wasn't comfortable" serving us alcohol and that she didn't trust our IDs. Mind you, my friend and I would never lie about our ages or use a fake ID and besides that the manager had allegedly scanned our IDs at this point which should have confirmed our ages. Manager raised an issue with my friend's Illinois ID, claiming that because it didn't have the RealID star, it was invalid (this is not true; RealID is not required in Illinois, and the presence of the star does not have to do with sale of alcohol at all). My Indiana ID did have the RealID star and I was also refused service so we think the manager was trying to come up with an excuse to not serve us because we look young. We were still pretty confused because we'd never been denied service at a restaurant before so My friend called a family member who asked to speak to the manager; manager walked away mid-conversation. We left without ordering and it was an incredibly humiliating and belittling situation. I understand that we look young but we both had valid IDs and were of legal age, only to be accused of faking our IDs and refused servie, which had never happened...
Read moreI've had two terrible, uncomfortable experiences here. The first time, we came in about 30 minutes before close and the waitress told us that we would be rushed, so I felt uncomfortable staying and left. The second time, there was something icy cold in my meal. I thought it might be the beans and sent it back. It was quickly brought back to me. So, nothing could've been made right, imo. There was hardly time to microwave it. I'm not paying more than $13 for microwaved food (if that's even what happened). Upon the dish being brought back, I was told that it can't be the beans because they don't even keep the beans cold. Ok. Maybe it wasn't the beans, but there were actual ice chunks in it. When I got the dish back, I decided I no longer wanted it, in large part due to how it was insinuated that I can't be right. Why would I make that up? By that time, it was unappealing. I simply told the staff person to take it back. I was never even offered the chance to try something else, so I shared a meal with the person I was with. To top it all off, that person ordered poached eggs (which typically have a runny yolk), the waitress was told, and it was dismissed because "we always ring poached eggs up as medium." How are we supposed to know that? This entire time we tried to be patient with the waitress, however, at the same time, it was not the best experience and, of course, we were a little annoyed. The waitress let us know that "she was done with us because everything for us had been wrong." When I order something, I expect it to be right and will let people know (as nicely as possible) if it isn't. Restaurant staff should be able to handle customer complaints when they are delivered respectfully, without yelling and nasty words (which should never happen). But, at the same time, they don't get a free pass when something with the...
Read moreArrived at GRR International and needed a bite before continuing my journey. Picked Sundance Bar and Grill as it was on 28th St and relatively close to the airport.
Restaurant was relatively slow, but the service was great. Host seated promptly, and the server (Casey) was efficient, friendly, and busting his butt the entire time I was there.
Located in a strip mall on 28th St, Sundance has seven covered tables for outdoor seating. The seating area faces be parking lot and 28th, but it was still nice to be outside.
Food was the weak point of the visit. I ordered the Taos Skillet, hoping for something dynamic, but it wasn’t. Over easy eggs were spot on, but the rest of the dish lacked character. The jalapeños were straight from the can, hash browns deep fried, with fixings sautéed beneath. Unfortunately, I just couldn’t escape the feeling that everything from the kitchen was quickly pulled from their respective cans or frozen Sysco bags, quickly heated and mixed to serve. The whole compilation just lacked character. Even the coffee was about as dynamic as coffee colored water. It wasn’t ‘bad’ to coffee, but it surely didn’t present with any independence or pride.
It feels like every time Sundance had an opportunity to push the envelope or present some character, they instead opted for the mundane. They played every hole of the course for par, which doesn’t seem to work for an establishment touting “...traditional American regional specialties, with Southwestern influences.” I’m betting no one associated with Sundance Bar and Grill has spent any significant time in the Southwestern US.
The food gets 2 stars. The outdoor seating and excellent service from Casey bring it...
