Since moving to Austin nine years ago, we have been searching for a Chicago style deep dish pizza place. We live 40 minutes from Rosati‘s but wanted to give it a try! From experience, we know that deep dish takes a long time to cook. Their website indicates 30 minutes cooking time. To minimize this wait time, we ordered ahead of time through their website. The only option through the website since we live so far away is to mark the order “to-go”.
Being a pizza place, we didn’t imagine it would be an issue to eat it there. Most pizza places have open seating and let you come and go as you please. In Chicago, they make you order your pizza ahead, and they refuse to seat you until your pizza is ready.
Once we drove the 40 minutes to get there, there was no one to greet us for several minutes. The restaurant was mostly empty with over 10 empty tables and no one waiting to be seated. When we finally found the woman behind the counter, she acted like we were bothering her. No smile or greeting, just a sullen attitude as we told her we had ordered online and showed her our confirmation. She walked away without a word. Once she returned with our pizzas, we told her we wanted to eat in the restaurant at a table. She didn’t answer us, stared at us for a couple seconds with a blank expression and then turn and walked away again.
When she came back, she said that they did not allow people who had ordered carryout pizzas to eat them in the restaurant. We explained to her that we had ordered ahead of time so that we wouldn’t have to clog up a table for 30 minutes waiting for the pizza and if we drove home it would be cold by the time we got there. She argued with us saying that they want the tables to be used for people to have the “full dining experience” and since we had ordered to go, they would rather we took our pizza to go.
This seems really strange because it is a pizza place, not a fine dining restaurant. As first time customers, it’s disappointing to be so unvalued. We were trying to be respectful of their time, and were not expecting to be turned away after we drove 40 minutes.
So we asked to talk to the manager. Not in a Karen kind of way, but in a kind way of simply asking if we can use a table without bothering them. We told him we didn’t expect them to give us drinks, plates or service, we just need somewhere to sit so the pizza isn’t cold when we eat it. The manager was an older gentleman who was gracious and offered us a table.
To his credit, he did bring us plates and silverware, water and napkins. He was very kind and did his best to make up for the rudeness of the initial encounter. However, the situation really sat bad with us, and we felt guilty using their table. to prevent dirty their dishes, we ate on the lids of the pizza boxes and did not bother them for drinks or other items.
The pizza itself was hot, the ingredients were fine, the sauce was a little sweet for me, but otherwise no complaints. I do not recommend this restaurant based on the service, but I do want to give credit to the gentleman who tried to make up for the bad service we received. Of course, we left him a tip. I hope he didn’t share it with Grouchy McGroucherton.
As a small business owner myself, I understand that the customer is the most important thing. We will not be returning to Rosati‘s, but perhaps you will have a better experience...
Read moreI had driven by Rosati‘s on my way across town one day last week. I know it’s been there as they have a very large sign. It just never registered as an Italian restaurant so when I was fresh in my mind, I decided to order a pizza to go from them Friday night. My husband was kind enough to go and pick it up and he advised it was crazy busy with a long line to be seated to eat in the restaurant and good size line for pick up as well. He did say they were doing a good job of managing it, so the wait time wasn’t horrific Ordering online was pretty easy they have the style of app where you can very easily do a half-and-half pizza which we always appreciate because 99% of the time that’s what we want. Many pizza places only have certain sizes if you like the thin crust, and of course many don’t offer it at all I was really surprised that Rosati‘s offered thin crust in every size from small to extra large, and the cost of an extra large pizza with three extra toppings. was about $38 but considering we had to complete meals that was absolutely acceptable the pizza was thin crust indeed and well done as per requested nice and crispy on the bottom. It was loaded with toppings. The only thing that was scarce was the sauce we felt we could’ve done with a little more of that. Regarding the toppings, it was canned mushrooms, which my preferences actually fresh sliced mushrooms but, it is just a preference. The overall flavor of the pizza was good, especially while it was hot . is the pizza cooled off I did feel that the types of cheese used were questionable perhaps a bit of a different blend. I am not sure but I will ask when I go in. As far as the bacon for a topping, it was freshly cooked, regular sliced bacon that had been shot and was plentiful that with the fresh tomatoes was really tasty!!! I’d like to go and eat in person next time to check out the ambience it sounded like a very busy, classically Italian restaurant on a Friday night!! I will document the...
Read moreWent it with 2 family members (3 total) were told we had to sit outside.. ok cool.. we ordered 3 beers (1 each) and the hostest was rude. The way she told us to go out side was one thing, ok she's busy dismissed, she brought us drinks and took our order. We never been there and my husband ordered the pizza. Apparently he mispronounced the word and she said "I don't know what your talking about we don't have that here" and she pronounced it a slightly different way, with a attitude. My husband told her, hey I tip good don't have a attitude with me. She laughed it off and went inside.. when she came back out we asked her to put the UT game on she said when she gets a chance she's too busy. Umm ok again RUDE.. we over looked the rudeness and went upon our visit. While we were sitting there, the plastic chair broke underneath my husband and he fell and hit the ground HARD. The waitress saw this and continued to help the other table. I went inside and grabbed him another chair. (Not my job) my husband tried to walk it off and the owner came out and said "oh looks like he had too many cervesas (beer)". I said "no your weak chairs can't support heavy set people and they need to be fixed or adjusted". He said "I'm the owner and I've never seen that happen . He must must be drunk. " I said you know what just give me our food to go, I'm not doing this with you." He brought our pizza out and charged us $48.00. Mind you this whole time was less than 30 mins. You can see and feel the racisim in there. They put you outside if your not white.. I heard about it but didn't believe it until I went.. I called corporate and a lawyer.. and word of mouth...
