Captains Fish and Chicken — Restaurant in Cedar Rapids

I was raised on the water on the East Coast. After moving to Cedar Rapids, Iowa some 19 years ago, I can truly say that it is hard to find a good piece of salt water fish. I can no longer say that because now we have Captain's Fish and Chicken. I have eaten here three times now and have had the fried grouper, the fried Cod and also the fried shrimp. this place brought me back home in many ways allow me break this down

1. Everything was breaded "in house" (as it should be!) with a flavorful, yet still delicate blend of breading and spices. There was no "Scully's Catch of the Day!" which is in fact poured out of a plastic bag taken from the deep recessed of the freezer.
2. the Jumbo shrimp were indeed Jumbo. These were not medium shrimp that they simply breaded several times to add a quarter inch of girth to. I would estimate their size to be 12-14 count per pound. This is the perfect size for a fried jumbo shrimp. The shrimp had that soft "snap" when you bit into them which indicates that these were fresh and fried perfectly.
3. if there were one complaint, it would be that the fillets were very thick. I only say this because the thinner fillets will if they're fresh. Nevertheless, the massive fillets that I received were flaky, perfectly cooked and undoubtedly fresh.
4. Allow me to address the ambiance. If you go to an authentic Fish House on the east or west coast, you order at the counter and your fish is brought to you. While some may call this "Spartan", it is simply what a good fish house looks like. You go there for a great piece of fish, not for a setting plucked out of the pages of architectural Digest.
5. the fries are crisp and perfect. The tartar sauce was homemade and delicious but the fish was so good you don't really need it.

In summary, we have one authentic Fish House in Cedar Rapids and we...

We had heard about this place online and thought we would give it a try. We ordered two of the combination dinners for takeout. When I got the food home, we first discovered that the cole slaw was missing from our dinners. Next, we opened the box to find one soggy piece of common white bread on top which we promptly fed to our dogs. The hushpuppies we ordered as a side were very good, as was the chicken. We found the fish to be very greasy though, and the fries to be pretty soggy as well. All in all, I would give then Kudos for decent fried chicken and friendly service, but we likely won't be returning anytime soon as all the grease gave us each a bit of a tummy ache by the time...

If you have to follow a low sodium diet don't go here.

Having said that, food was good, large portions, well seasoned. Got the chicken fingers with fries, two piece cod meal with fries and fried mushrooms.

Everything was good, fish had a cornmeal type of breading. Chicken strip were crunchy and moist inside, hard to do for most restaurants. Mushrooms seemed to be the frozen type, but still good.

Coleslaw was very wet, but with a little pepper it was on par with that Kentucky chicken place.

Plan to wait for awhile, because they make it as it's ordered, but overall...
