Oyama Sushi & Steakhouse — Restaurant in Cedar Rapids

Very upset about how they handled a messed up order. We placed an order for delivery of a dinner chicken hibachi ($17.95) and 5 sushi rolls. Once we got our order I realized we didn’t get any fried rice with the hibachi order. Normally I wouldn’t really care about something so minimal but if I’m like most people, hibachi isn’t really the same without the rice. I called the restaurant wondering what could be done. I’m not sure what I expected, but I at least expected them to care. They questioned me at first and asked me to double check. They didn’t believe me. Then they offered for me to drive there and pick up the fried rice, I explained that we ordered delivery for a reason. They then offered to refund me $2.50 on our $87 order. I told them don’t bother. Then they offered a discount of 5% off of the next order we place. I also said don’t bother because we will not be back. This is a place we frequent on special occasions. This was a planned meal for our anniversary. I am very disappointed the lack of service from this restaurant. Felt rushed. Server didn’t understand the difference between Maguro or Mackerel, and English was worse than the cook. Then he proceeded to set his serving tray on the cooking surface multiple times, in which the chef never cleaned the surface again.

The atmosphere felt more like a garage bar, with a TV in the room where the anticipation was the show that the Chef was supposed to put on, not the soccer game in the background.

I ordered a basic Tuna Nigiri, it looked like someone watched a YouTube video on how to make sushi.

The server then brought the “soup” with the salad at the same time. Again, feeling constantly rushed.

The chef was good at cooking, but watching him using the spatula to flip the switch on the overhead fan, then go back to cooking the food was interesting. When the cooking was done, the server immediately placed to-go containers in front of us, while we were still eating.

Severely rushed. For 30$ a meal, one would assume that the food hygiene would be better, and more thought about, the quality would be better, and the overall appearance would be better suited to...

We where seated right away which was nice. It was loud on a Friday evening (5:30 ish) but I could lean over a bit and hear my husband talk. And employees always had masks on (some people may still want to know). Only complaint I have is we were seated right in front of the sushi bar, So we saw my husband's dinner bento box brought out to sit there while my sushi order sat in their queue to make. (Lots of pick up/delivery orders mixed In, pretty sure that's why I had to wait so long compared to his) I honestly would have preferred if they just gave my husband his meal hot and I wouldn't have minded waiting for my sushi. His meal sat there for a while. When we both got our meals his was a little above Luke warm. Friendly staff and they were always picking up our empty dishes or glasses and were great about refilling my drink.
