The staff were polite and helpful. I must admit that their "North Indian" dishes are quite good. The chicken curry that came with the Thali was the best of all the dishes, and their mixed vegetable pickle was excellent. The bhatura was good, although the channa/chole was a bit too runny—I’ve had better.
However, what they claim to be "South Indian" food was just terrible. The batter for the idli/dosa seemed too sour, and the idli felt like a stale one that had been re-steamed for our order. The vada also seemed like it had been re-fried. The sambar was mediocre, and the chutney was overly sour, appearing to be a thawed frozen variety. The staff were kind enough to waive the charge for this dish. It makes you wonder, though: if a restaurant can’t get idli and vada right, what’s the point of claiming to offer South Indian food?
Overall, it seems their Punjabi-style dishes are what anyone should go for while skipping the South Indian options—unless they get a new chef to handle the South Indian cuisine. For a new restaurant that has taken over Ruchi, which was apparently popular for South Indian food, this was a disappointment. The restrooms are old and merely repainted, and the atmosphere was dull.
It has only been two weeks since they opened, so there’s room for improvement. They need to make changes quickly, or they’re...
Read moreToday was the grand opening of Sampurna. The manager and our waiter greeted us, seated us quickly, and checked on us many times. The interior is decorated nicely, it’s clean, and I believe there is also a bar but it wasn’t open when we came in.
We originally were going to try something from the menu but decided to try the buffet instead. On the menu there were many non-veg options but the buffet was fully vegetarian. They offered curries, daal, sides (chutney, raita, pickle), some sweets, and rice/roti. I recommend trying out the Bhagwan Baigan curry because it definitely stood out to me the most in terms of flavor. I usually don’t go for eggplant but the curry was delicious, I’d 100% get that again. The chole and sambar was pleasant. They also gave us masala dosas which we enjoyed with the sambar. They also have chai available, however, I wished it was a bit hotter, it was warm.
I’d like to try more items from here, especially the menu items since the buffet items were all veg; I’d also be able to judge that on quantity. It would be great if they added more variety to the buffet such as plain rice to go with the rasam or daal. I am not sure if they had limited variety today since it was the first day. Regardless, I still had a good overall experience here with the service, and all the items on my plate...
Read moreLet me start off with the positives. This is the best service I have received at an Indian restaurant. Very friendly and welcoming. Having said that, let's talk about the food. The Masala Dosa was very well made. It was thin and crispy and the sides were delicious. However, the paneer pakora was underwhelming and the south Indian thali was disappointing given that this is a South Indian restaurant. The Dal lacked enough salt, the rasam had too much tamarind, the papad seemed to be fried in reused oil, it was soggy and tasted weird. I also don't know why a South Indian thali had 3 North Indian style curries including chickpeas, some paneer dish and a mixed veg curry. The chickpea curry was also not served hot. However, the roti and the rice that came with were excellent.
Here are some suggestions : Serve some south Indian dishes with the thali like tindora curry, gutti Vankaya, sorakaya pulusu, avial. There are so many options. Just microwave the papad. That way you don't have to worry about what oil you use. It turns out to be more healthy anyway and is crisper. Fix the taste of rasam by reducing tamarind and adding salt to the Dal. Also, reduce the chunky pieces of ginger in the Dal, rather just add paste at the...
